Game Recap
Texas concluded their three-game set, and the season series, against the Royals in Kansas City. The Rangers looked for a sweep against Kansas City for the second time in their last three series. Dane Dunning took the mound who looked to change his fortunes on the road. In 2022, Dunning had seven road starts, going 0-4 with a 6.03 ERA compared to a 2.83 ERA at home. The offense went up against the Royals’ ace, Zack Greinke, making his twenty-second career start against the Rangers. "They shut us down today," Chris Woodward said.
The Royals took the early in the first inning. With two outs, four straight baserunners reached against Dane Dunning. The fourth baserunner was a single by MJ Melendez, but Leody Taveras threw a 99 MPH strike to Meibrys Viloria to tag Hunter Dozier. Bobby Witt Jr. scored the run to put Kansas City up 1-0. The Rangers had chances in the first and second innings but couldn’t capitalize. In the fifth inning, Leody Taveras hit a shot to right field to tie the game up at one. "He came in and had a decent game after his first game and slowed down after that," Woodward said about Leody Taveras and what he's seen. "Lately he's been making some good adjustments. He's in tune with the game and puts his work in and it's showing up right now." However, Kansas City took the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth with a Kyle Isbel home run going 395 feet.
The Rangers and Royals didn’t get many offensive chances after the fifth inning. Texas went 2 for 14 in the final four innings. The club went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position Wednesday equaling a tough offensive performance. "Greinke did a good job," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "[He] did what Greinke does. We had an opportunity in the first inning. He made some good pitches on Adolis and Kole to get out of it, but couldn't muster up much against him until Taveras' hit the homer."
While Dane Dunning has his struggles on the road, Wednesday was different. Despite being tagged with the loss, Dunning pitched one of his better games away from Globe Life Field. Dane went six innings, six hits, two runs, three walks, and three strikeouts. Matt Moore, as usual, threw two scoreless frames Wednesday. Even though Moore looked a little uncomfortable in his second inning, he still only allowed one hit and struck out one.
