Game Recap

After game one’s loss, the Rangers and Yankees turned to game two of a day/night doubleheader. The Rangers designated Jesús Tinoco as the opener for a bullpen game. Once again, Aaron Judge got a crack at his sixty-second home run of 2022, which would be an American League record. Tony Beasley and the Rangers said they would pitch to Judge and not around him. “I want him to get his opportunities, Jon Gray said after game one. “Not putting it over the plate, but getting over the dish, but it’s going to be good.” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after game one that Judge wasn’t too far off, “I think he’s gotten some pitches instead of really sticking them like he has sixty-one times and more, [Judge is] fouling some balls off, but I don’t think he’s far off.” Jon Gray also said after the game that Judge would get his home run, and sure enough, it happened three hours later.

On the third pitch thrown by Tinoco, Judge went liftoff to left field. The ball cleared over the left field wall at 391 feet, caught by a fan with a Rangers hat. Judge rounded the bases as the crowd erupted, and the Yankees cleared the dugout. High-fives and hugs surrounded Aaron. "It's part of the game. I challenged [Judge] and he hit a home run," Tinoco said. "I wasn't nervous at all, I have a routine which I go through like I would any other time. I'm a pitcher and I have to go out and compete and that's what I did." "Never tried to focus on the number, never tried to focus on going out there and doing it, just go out there and play my game, and if I'm good enough and god willing, it will happen. I thin having that kind of faith helped me out in the entire process," Aaron Judge said after the game on if the milestone was effecting him.

The Rangers answered in the bottom of the inning as Adolis García drove in Marcus Semien with a single. Jose Trevino threw out Adolis trying to steal second and Josh Jung at third when Jung tripled. Josh Smith started the second inning with a double, but Gerrit Cole struck out the side (Sam Huff, Kole Calhoun, and Leody Taveras) to end the threat.

The Yankees picked up a leadoff single by DJ LeMahieu and a Jose Trevino walk with two outs against Kolby Allard. Allard followed by striking out Aaron Hicks to end the fourth and keep the game even at one. In the fifth, Giancarlo Stanton showcased his power driving one to the Yankees bullpen and regaining the lead for New York at 2-1. Leody Taveras followed in the inning with a two-run home run to the Rangers bullpen, giving the Rangers the lead at 3-2. The offenses went quiet for the final four innings of the night as Texas came back and took game two of the doubleheader by one-run.

Jesús Tinoco opened the night and allowed the most monumental home run in MLB history the past fifteen years and possibly more. After the homer, he allowed two singles and a walk. However, Tinoco settled down and struck out Oswald Peraza and Harrison Bader to avoid more damage. "It didn't effect me at all. I wanted to get out there, compete, and do the best job I could," Tinoco told me when I asked if the home run effected him in the next few at-bats.

Next, Kolby Allard pitched an excellent game coming out of the bullpen. Allard allowed a home run but overall struck out six and gave up two hits and two walks in four innings. Taylor Hearn threw three shutout innings. Hearn walked two but didn't allow a hit in his relief appearance on Tuesday and struck out two. Matt Moore threw a perfect ninth inning while striking out two to close out the double dip and pick up the save

  • Gerrit Cole picked up his 249th strikeout of the season, breaking the Yankees franchise record for strikeouts in a season.
