Game Recap
The Rangers concluded their 2022 season at home Wednesday against the Yankees. Glenn Otto got the final nod of the year against the team that drafted him in 2017. The last time Otto faced the Yankees (May 8th in New York), he threw five innings, allowing two hits, two runs, three walks, and striking out two. Meanwhile, the Rangers faced off against Domingo Germán, who is making his third start against the Rangers. Last season, Germán threw seven shutout innings against Texas on May 20th, allowing six hits and striking out five. "For the guys to come out and compete until the end and not quit [or] give up. [They] could have thrown in the towels, but they didn't do that," Tony Beasley said after the game on the team battling for a split against the playoff Yankees. "That's a testament to the guys in that clubhouse, the character in the clubhouse, and what they're made out of. Those are positive signs moving forward. I'm proud of the way they competed this whole time."
The Yankees scored first on the afternoon. After a walk and a single, Kyle Higashioka singled to right field, scoring Oswald Peraza and putting New York up 1-0. Otto got out of trouble and struck out Aaron Hicks to end the frame. The Rangers countered in the third inning with a solo home run by Charlie Culberson. The ball scraped over the left field wall for career hit number 300. "It shows you that they're different milestones for different people. Not all of us can hit 62 in a season and now I have 30 in my career," Charlie Culberson said about what 300 career hits and 30 career homers mean to him. "It means a lot to me. I'm a numbers guy and those even numbers are cool. I can say I've been around for a long time. It took my a while to get there but hopefully I can get some more." Then in the fourth, Jose Trevino burned his former club with a shot to left field to put the Yankees back on top 2-1. The Rangers immediately tied things up as Jonah Heim went liftoff to right field to the point where right fielder Marwin Gonzalez didn’t turn around.
The Rangers took the lead in the fifth. Leody Taveras singled up the middle as Aaron Hicks bobbled the ball, allowing Leody to take second base. Bubba Thompson followed with a double that clipped off Josh Donaldson, allowing Taveras to score. Marcus Semien then singled to right-center field, extending the Texas lead to 4-2. Texas had a chance with two on to extend their lead in the sixth thanks to two walks, but a groundout by Bubba Thompson to third base ended the threat. In the eighth, the Rangers struck three straight singles by Josh Jung, Josh Smith, and Heim. A relay from left field to the plate caught Jung at the plate on replay review (or according to the umpires in New York) and negated a run. Texas would end up not scoring in their eighth. The Yankees brought the tying run to the plate, but a fly out and a strikeout ended the afternoon. "I thanked [the players] and I'm proud of the way they competed. Our record isn't all the way indictive of how the team played," Beasley said.
Glenn Otto finished 2022 strong with a six-inning and two-run performance Wednesday. Despite some pieces out of the Yankees lineup, Otto managed to navigate against a formidable New York lineup. In his six frames, Otto allowed four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts on seventy-seven pitches. "It's time to make that jump to show that I can reach my potential [and] its time to make that happen. Everybody in this clubhouse wants to reach their absolute potential," Otto said after the game on finishing the season strong. "We're thankful for everybody here and make this experience incredible. [I] will continue to work hard and the work is just beginning, it's the biggest offseason I've had and it's worth it to be able to get this club to the postseason and the future playing in the World Series [and] winning the World Series."
Yerry Rodríguez made his major league debut on Wednesday and threw a scoreless inning allowing one hit. Rodríguez struck out Oswald Peraza to nab his first MLB strikeout. Dennis Santana finished 2022 strong retiring the Yankees and allowing only one walk. Matt Moore walked one, but finished off the Yankees to seal the save and finish the Rangers season off with a win.
Postgame Notes
Nathaniel Lowe finishes the season, hitting .302. He became the first Rangers player since Elvis Andrus, and Adrián Beltré did it in 2016. Since 2014, the only two Rangers players to hit .300 or better and belt 25 home runs are Beltré and Nathaniel Lowe.
