Game Recap

Texas and Detroit concluded a four-game series at the Motor City on Father's Day and Juneteenth. The Rangers tried to take the four-game series after a beat down on Saturday. They turned to Dane Dunning coming off a six-inning and two-hit shutout against the Houston Astros (despite four walks). The Tigers turned to veteran starter Drew Hutchinson making his fourth career start against the Rangers. "We couldn't get anything going," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "When we did it was five or six lineouts that could have been extra base hits if they found the gap."

The first inning Sunday replicated the first inning Saturday. The Rangers got a solo home run by Corey Seager to put them up 1-0. However, the Tigers got three runs back on a Robbie Grossman home run. The Tigers lost their manager in the third inning as home plate umpire Jansen Visconti ejected AJ Hinch for arguing balls and strikes. The Rangers got a run back on a Nathaniel Lowe single up the middle to score Adolis García cutting the Tigers' lead to 3-2. An inning later, Texas tied the game up at three with Adolis García's RBI single to left field, scoring Marcus Semien. However, the Tigers capitalized on good base running and patience. With the bases loaded and two outs, Spencer Torkelson blooped a two-run single to center field off the end of the bat.

Texas got the Tigers' starter, Hutchinson out of the game in the fifth, but couldn't get anything going against the Detroit bullpen. The Rangers picked up one baserunner after Alex Lange's relief outing in the fifth inning with five strikeouts. In the eighth inning, the Tigers scored a run on a fielders' choice as Corey Seager went to the plate. It appeared that the out was made on the Heim tag on Torkelson, but the call was safe and replay upheld on the call after a Rangers challenge. Detroit added another run on a Robbie Grossman single but Marcus Semien preserved a run on a throw to the plate. The offense couldn't muster up anything in the ninth, ending the afternoon with a Tigers win. "At the end of the game they put their best guys out there adn we couldn't muster up anything," Woodward said.

Dane Dunning walked four batters for the second straight start, but the Tigers burned him a couple of times. He allowed five runs and four hits and struck out two in 4.2 innings on Sunday. His two strikeouts are the second-lowest of the season (the lowest came on June 8th, where he struck out one against Cleveland, but the start ended abruptly due to the rain delay). "The 0-2 hit-by-pitch and you get a couple of guys on and that's one you can't do with Grossman is give him a good pitch to hit," Woodward said. I thought he was okay until the fifth inning. [But] those walks hurt him at the end. In the middle innings he was effective."

Dennis Santana came in to clean up the fifth inning but allowed a two-run single and a walk. Santana struck out Jonathan Schoop as the lone out recorded. "I thought Dennis made some good pitches," Woodward said. "The ball was down and off the plate and down below the zone. It's good piece of hitting by Torkelson." Matt Moore came into a multi-inning role again Sunday and walked two. He didn't allow a hit or a run in thirty-two pitches while striking out three. In Matt Bush's one inning, he allowed two runs on three hits while walking one hitter.

Postgame Notes

  • The Rangers are 18-32 all-time on Father's Day. They've lost three times on Father's Day and seven of their last nine.

  • The five earned runs for Dane Dunning ties a season-high. In addition, Dunning walked eight in his last two starts, whereas he walked nine in his previous six starts.

  • Drew Hutchinson had gone two starts against the Rangers without allowing an earned run entering Sunday. Hutchinson hadn't faced Texas since 2015.

  • Corey Seager walked five times in the four-game series. Seager walked five times in his last ten games entering the series (including an intentional walk).

  • It's the fourth time Seager homered in back-to-back games.

  • Rangers have homered in nineteen of their last twenty-two games.

  • A Rangers catcher threw out a baserunner for a caught stealing on April 26th. It also ended a stretch of twenty-eight straight successful stolen base attempts by oppositions.

  • In June, Matt Moore has thrown eight scoreless innings, allowing two walks and one hit. Moore struck out twelve of the twenty-five batters faced in June
