Game Recap
After hanging on to a 7-6 victory on Friday, the Rangers took on the Tigers in game two of the three-game weekend series. It was the Rangers' first look at Dallas Keuchel getting the nod with Cole Ragans on the injured list. "I welcomed him to the clubhouse and told him to be himself," Tony Beasley said before the game. "He's been around and the impact he's had in the guys in Triple-A. I asked him if you can impact our young guys; you know what winning looks like. Help out [and] be a mentor. Basically, I want him to have fun and be himself. I understand he's on a mission as well to reestablish himself. Sometimes you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, and sometimes the middle of nowhere is where you find yourself." The Rangers faced former Red Sox starter, Eduardo Rodríguez on Saturday. Unfortunately, Keuchel wasn't able to settle in for his start.
The night started rocky for Dallas Keuchel. Detroit strung a double by Victor Reyes, then a single by Javy Báez to put Detroit up 1-0. Willi Castro drove in Báez to complete a two-run first frame for the Tigers. The Rangers answered with a Nathaniel Lowe single scoring Marcus Semien, though Lowe got doubled off on a line shot back to Rodríguez. Detroit added two more with a sacrifice fly by Reyes and an infield single by Báez, extending the Tigers' lead to 4-1. In the fifth, Detroit added another run on an Eric Haase sacrifice fly scoring Reyes. Jeimer Candelario, in the next inning, broke things open with a two-run home run, extending the Tigers' lead to 7-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Rangers had two on with none out. However, Jonah Heim flew out, and Leody Taveras lined out to second base, doubling off Lowe. It was Nathaniel's second time being doubled off (however, both were screaming shots that turned to quick double plays). "Those were two that are tough to get back on. You leads in your secondaries are pretty much going to get you. Nothing you can do on those," Tony Beasley said. Detroit added another run on their third sacrifice fly of the night. Zack Short drove in Candelario with a fly out to right center field putting Detroit up 8-1. Haase delivered with a two-run home run in the ninth inning along with a Candelario run scoring fielders choice to cap off the offense for Detroit. The last gas for Texas included an Adolis García solo home run to right field, but that was all Texas could accumulate.
Dallas Keuchel's Rangers debut didn't go too well Saturday. Keuchel had one inning where he retired the side in order. Outside of that, it was traffic all night. Overall, Dallas went 5.1 and allowed eleven hits, seven runs, one walk, and one strikeout on ninety-six pitches. "That was a tough one. Physically I felt great and that was the main part coming in," Keuchel said. "The way my pitches were working in Round Rock were similar. It was kind of like a death by a thousand cuts."
On a positive note, Dennis Santana had one of his best outings in a while. Santana threw 1.2 innings, allowing only one walk while striking out three. Josh Sborz came in to try to finish the game, but allowed two hits and a run in the eighth. In the ninth, Sborz gave up three hits and a walk along with three runs. Brett Martin had to come in to clean up the inning. Martin allowed two hits, but left the bases loaded to conclude the night.
Postgame Notes
Nathaniel Lowe's thirty-eight hits in August are the most by a Ranger since Elvis Andrus had thirty-seven hits in June of 2019. Lowe is hitting .392 with an on-base percentage of .449.
Leody Taveras has hits in ten of his last twelve games, going 12 for 40 in that span (.300).
Adolis García extends his hitting streak to twenty-three games. It's the longest in the American League this season and the third longest in MLB this year.
Saturday was the third start Keuchel had this season where he allowed seven or more runs (thirteen starts). In the previous four seasons (2018-2021), Keuchel had three starts where he allowed seven or more runs (ninety-four starts).
Javier Báez went nine straight games without an RBI entering the game. He had his second two-RBI night in August (twenty-two games).
The last eight inherited runners have not scored against Dennis Santana
Saturday was the most lopsided loss this season by the Rangers (nine runs). It's the second time this season Texas lost by seven or more runs to the Tigers (June 18th).
