Game Recap
The Rangers entered Saturday, allowing only one run in the past two games in Detroit. Both Jon Gray and Martín Pérez stifled a struggling Tigers offense in the series. Taylor Hearn took the mound trying to get back going after allowing three earned runs in each of his last three starts. The Tigers sent Rony García, who had gone five or fewer innings in all four of his starts in 2022. The recipe sounds like the Rangers would do their thing on both the offense and pitching side, but as usual, the tables turned Saturday. "[García] was attacking the zone," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "Our guys were falling behind and García pounded the zone and the lead helped him [out]."
The Rangers jumped off against García in the opening, with Texas’ García (Adolis) launching a home run to the Rangers bullpen. However, the quick lead evaporated when Detroit hit two of their home runs in the bottom of the inning. Robbie Grossman and Javy Báez each contributed in dingers to put the Tigers up 3-1 after one inning. Detroit added another run in the second as Willi Castro hit into a double play, scoring Jonathan Schoop. The wheels fell off in the fourth inning. Willi Castro and Miguel Cabrera combined with RBI singles each, and then Eric Haase broke the game open with a three-run shot of Jesus Tinoco (came in relief for Taylor Hearn). Tigers lead 9-1 after four innings.
Detroit didn’t stop there. The Tigers got the first two men on base in the fifth inning. Kody Clemens hit a sacrifice fly to left field to put double digits into the run column for Detroit. Willi Castro followed with a triple to score Spencer Torkelson to add insult to injury and put the Tigers up 11-1. Texas got three runs back in the sixth as Marcus Semien hit a double play, scoring Leody Taveras and Corey Seager homered to nix the Detroit fifth inning. Adolis García scored on a little league home run as he ran to third aggressively and scored on the second Tigers error of the sixth inning. The Rangers crawled within 11-4. The Tigers added three more runs in the sixth as Leclerc yanked a changeup in the dirt, scoring Cabrera followed by a Schoop single and Clemens double to put Detroit up ten after six. The Rangers got runners on in the ninth. Nathaniel Lowe and Sam Huff each contributed with RBI singles. Leody Taveras hit into a double play scoring a run which ended a miracle Rangers rally.
Taylor Hearn scuffled on Saturday. After three and two-thirds innings, Rangers manager Chris Woodward lifted Hearn as he allowed eight runs, ten hits and struck out four Tigers. However, Hearn’s slider appeared left over the plate multiple times, and the Tigers took full advantage. "[Taylor] was missing in the middle too much," Woodward said. "He left too many balls over the plate to their better hitters. A lot of mistakes and things he got to be better at. He's got to be able to execute better."
Jesus Tinoco came into the fourth to try to clean up the mess. However, he allowed a home run and two more runs in the fifth inning. Jesus had his worst outing of the season (Triple-A or Majors), allowing three runs, three runs, a walk, and a strikeout in an inning and a third. José Leclerc entered a game for the first time since July 26th, 2020 (692 days ago). It wasn’t a good first outing for Leclerc as he allowed four hits, three runs, a walk, a wild pitch, and a passed ball in the inning. "You never know how things will go the first time out there in a couple of years.," Woodward said. I said it was nice to see him out there throwing the ball. It was nice to get him healthy and back out there." John King allowed a lead off hit in both of the two innings he worked, but the runner stranded each time. King pitched two scoreless with two strikeouts.
