Overview

The Rangers look to make it three straight on their current road trip and win their first series of 2022. Martín Pérez takes the hill for Texas, coming off a couple of three earned run performances to begin his road back with the Rangers. Sunday’s start against the Angels was about not letting Pérez face the Angels a third time in the lineup. With the Angels lineup more experienced than the Athletics, does Rangers manager Chris Woodward go the same direction? Another factor is that the bullpen is more rested entering Saturday’s afternoon contest against Oakland than last Sunday against the Angels. If the offense can jumpstart the afternoon like Friday night’s game, could Martín be the first starter throwing a pitch in the sixth?

For Oakland, they’ll send Frankie Montas to the mound Saturday. With many players exiting the Athletics, Montas was on the list that eventually never got traded. While rumors still swirled, he’ll take the bump against a Texas offense that scored fourteen runs in the last two games. In his first outing against the Phillies, Montas struggled, but his previous two were good against the Rays and Orioles. He allowed one run in each of the last two starts and went six or more innings throwing over eighty pitches. Montas earned the 2021 American League pitcher of the month for September. He was 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA in six starts in September 2021.

Pregame Notables

  1. In 2017 Frankie Montas had three scoreless relief outings against Texas. Since then, he’s started five games against the Rangers and allowed twenty earned runs in 27.2 innings (6.51 ERA). He made one start against Texas on June 21st last year. The Rangers knocked him around for eight runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings.

  2. Kole Calhoun is 6 for 15 lifetime against Frankie Montas with two home runs.

  3. Only two Oakland Athletics hitters on the roster have history against Martín Pérez. Elvis Andrus is 2 for 5 lifetime, while Billy McKinney is 0 for 3.

  4. The Rangers are going for their third straight win. Their last three-game winning streak was September 6-8 of last season. It was a part of a four-game winning streak winning two at Anaheim and two at Arizona.

  5. Saturday will be Pérez’s first start against Oakland since 2018, but he has made eighteen career starts against the Athletics. He has a 5.17 ERA and a 1.555 WHIP against Oakland.

  6. The Rangers are looking to win their third series in Oakland in their last four tries.

  7. The seven-run victory Friday was the largest win by final score by Texas since August 29th, 2021, against the Astros (won 13-2)

  8. Rangers have been outscored 16-4 in the first inning in 2022, but they've outscored their opponents 17-3 in the second inning.
