Game Recap

The Rangers and Mariners met for the second game of a three-game weekend series. Texas began the afternoon with a roster move. After Josh Smith left Friday night’s game with shoulder soreness, the Rangers placed him on the injured list with a shoulder sprain. In his placement, the Rangers called up another player from the Joey Gallo trade a summer ago, Ezequiel Duran from Double-A Frisco. Then, Texas turned to Glenn Otto to take the mound against a familiar foe for Seattle, left-hander Marco Gonzales.

On Saturday, both pitchers held the offenses hitless for four and a half innings. While Marco Gonzales didn’t allow a baserunner for the first three innings, Glenn Otto walked five and hit a batter before the Mariners picked up their first base hit. Marcus Semien broke Gonzales’ perfect game bid with a single in the bottom of the fourth, moved to second on a Corey Seager groundout, and stole third base. Semien later scored on Adolis García’s ninth home run, with Mitch Garver on first base. "I was working on the plan and the adjustments helped mid-game," García said. "I was fortunate to be in that situation at that same time."

Once the Rangers took a 3-0 lead, the Mariners picked up their first hit on a Cal Raleigh single to right-center field. Then Jesse Winkler followed with a two-run home run over the Rangers bullpen, cutting to a 3-2 Texas lead. Both teams squandered opportunities after the fifth inning. The Mariners had two in the eighth inning, but King got Adam Frazier to ground out. The Rangers had two in the seventh inning, but an Eli White lineout ended Texas’ threat to extend the lead. Texas sent Joe Barlow to finish the Mariners off and was able to retire them in the ninth in order to split the series at one.

Glenn Otto pitched five innings on Saturday, allowing two runs and two hits. That’s the good news; the not-good news was that his pitch count became inflated with five walks on the day. "Everybody did a good job of staying focused," Otto said. "Guys made some good plays behind me and it's not always easy when I'm walking five batters. Try to focus on the positives, address the negatives mid-week and get ready for the next start. Try to attack the zone which the next pitch."

Dennis Santana pitched a clean sixth inning with one strikeout. However, an Abraham Toro groundout struck Dennis in the leg. Per the Rangers, he is considered day-to-day. Matt Moore has an excellent bounce-back game after a rough outing on Monday. Moore stuck out two and didn’t allow a baserunner in his one inning of work. John King gave up a couple of hits on Saturday but was able to keep the tying run from scoring in the eighth inning. Joe Barlow came back on after blowing a save Friday. It was business as usual for Barlow, striking out one and picking up his tenth save of the year. "I wish we had a doubleheader yesterday," Joe Barlow told Emily Jones after the game coming back and picking the save after blowing the save Friday. "I wanted to get back out here as quickly as possible."
