Overview

I hope you like the American League West because, baby, we got a whole lot of that in the tank for you. Starting tonight, the Rangers will play fourteen straight games against the West, a series against all four division foes. The stretch concludes April 28th with the Astros, but if the Rangers want to make noise within the division, it’s go time right now! "Even more go time, I think everyday is go tome. I love it, I think it's great," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "It's a good test for our ball club."

Tonight Texas gets their hands dirty against Shohei Ohtani, who takes the mound for the Angels. The Rangers had their moments at the plate against Ohtani, but overall, Shohei showed success against Texas in his career. It will also be the first time the Rangers saw Mike Trout since late April last year, and while facing Trout is nothing new for the rotation, it still brings a red flag to an Angels lineup that has shown inconsistencies throughout the past few seasons.

Meantime, Dane Dunning makes his first start at home in 2022. The road/home splits for Dane vastly differ in 2021, allowing thirteen more runs in seventeen fewer innings away from Globe Life Field. Some positives came out of Saturday’s three-run and five-inning no-decision, but now it’s about building up after that first outing.

Pregame Notables

  1. Shohei Ohtani had three games last year vs. the Rangers in which he pitched and hit. Ohtani struck out twenty-three in eighteen innings with a 3.50 ERA and walked four (fourteen hits allowed) on the pitching side. On the offensive side, Shohei went 0 for 11 with three strikeouts.

  2. Ohtani’s 117 pitches thrown on September 3rd, 2021, in Anaheim against the Rangers was a career-high. He threw eighty pitches on Opening Day against the Astros Thursday.

  3. The Angels won the season series in 2021, winning eleven of the nineteen meetings over Texas. However, the Rangers won four of the final five meetings. The Rangers didn’t win a season series last year against any AL West opposition. The closest was losing ten out of nineteen to the Oakland Athletics.

  4. Mike Trout was 7 for 13 last year at Globe Life Field. However, due to injury limitation in 2021, he only played in the April 26-28 series and had an OPS of 1.231. His seven hits equaled his seven hits from 2020, but Trout played in six games in 2020 at Globe Life Field.

  5. The last start for Dane Dunning, where he pitched five innings allowed one or fewer runs was August 2nd, 2021, against the Angels. In his two previous outings vs. LAA, Dunning allowed eleven runs, thirteen hits, and walked four in nine total innings pitched.

  6. Dane Dunning is on a streak where he’s allowed two or fewer runs in five straight outings vs. AL West oppositions. Although he hasn’t gone more than five innings in any of those outings, Dane had a one-inning outing and a two-inning outing mixed in.
