Game Recap
On Saturday, the Rangers and Red Sox met for the second game of their three-game series in Arlington. Friday was a less than desirable 7-1 loss, and Saturday was much the same. It was a nice reunion for Red Sox starter Rich Hill and the Texas manager, Chris Woodward. However, Hill got the best of the Rangers coupled with a tough outing by Texas starter Glenn Otto.
Boston quickly struck first on a solo home run by J.D. Martinez to left field. It extended his streak of reaching in every game played for the Red Sox (twenty-six games). The Rangers tied the game up in the bottom of the first against Hill, with Eli White stealing the show. White stole second and third, then scored on a Corey Seager single. After that, the second inning became treacherous for Otto. Three straight reached base against Glenn with two singles and one scoring putting Boston back on top. Then Kiké Hernández drove in a run with a sacrifice fly followed by a Rafael Devers two-run home run. Boston scored four in the second, going up 5-1.
Boston added three more in the fifth after a Hernández RBI groundout in the fourth inning. Franchy Cordero drove in Trevor Story with a single, officially ending the night for Glenn Otto. Josh Sborz entered, but Christian Vasquez drove in Cordero with a double, and Kiké drove in Vasquez with a double himself. Texas added two runs in the seventh on a Kole Calhoun double. The Rangers had small momentum with three straight baserunners, but Texas couldn’t add anything additional after the Calhoun double and left two on base. The Red Sox added a run in the eighth and the ninth innings. Xander Bogaerts hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth against Dennis Santana, while Jackie Bradley Jr. singled Franchy Cordero in the ninth inning of Brett Martin. Offensively there wasn't much for Texas tonight. "You let Rich Hill be comfortable and he starts spinning the baseball like he does, it's difficult," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said after the game.
On Saturday, the final line for Glenn Otto was four-plus innings (pitched to two hitters in the fifth). He allowed eight hits, eight runs, four walks, and four strikeouts on ninety-four pitches. "[I] kept falling behind guys," Glenn Otto said after the game. "If you fall behind guys in this league, it comes back to bite you. Some sequences that i wish I could have back, but [I] try to learn from it as well as I can and move on to the next one." Josh Sborz struck out two in the fifth but allowed two extra-base hits and one run on his line. On Saturday, Matt Moore continued his fantastic 2022 campaign with two more scoreless innings. Moore allowed a hit and struck out one batter. On Saturday, Dennis Santana came into a full inning, rare for Dennis. He allowed an unearned run in the eighth inning with a hit and a strikeout. Brett Martin’s ninth-inning ended with a run, two hits, and one strikeout. Four of the five pitchers on Saturday allowed a run in their outings.
Postgame Notes
It’s the second game in his MLB career where Glenn Otto allowed eight runs. On September 10, 2021, the other came in Oakland against the Athletics. He went 3.1 innings in that outing.
Texas is 5-17 when the opposition scores first.
Eli White is one of two players in MLB with seven stolen bases without getting thrown out. The other is Harrison Bader of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Jonah Heim doubled in the fourth inning to break a 0 for 9 stretch
Rich Hill entered Saturday with sixteen career innings against Texas. It’s the fourth-fewest innings he’s had against a team, with the three being teams Hill played for (Red Sox, Dodgers, and Twins).
Kole Calhoun has five RBIs in his last four games. He had two RBIs in his previous twenty-six games as a Ranger.
Charlie Culberson has three errors at third base in his last three games. Before that, he made three errors at third base in his previous twenty games.
Red Sox have won their fourth series in the last five times in Arlington since 2017. The only series Texas won at home against Boston in that span was 2021.
