Game Recap

Tuesday, the Rangers and Athletics played game two of a four-game series. After all the chaos Monday, more roster chaos happened. Texas named Kohei Arihara the starting pitcher after Monday's game. To correspond the Arihara move, Texas sent down Yerry Rodriguez to Triple-A, designated Elier Hernández for assignment, and brought up Mark Mathias from Triple-A Round Rock. "I ws nervous, but I know I could do better. That's my honest opinion, I think I can do better," Kohei Arihara said. Meanwhile, Texas faced the Oakland rookie, JP Sears making his second start with the Athletics. Sears was a part of the Frankie Montas deal between Oakland and the Yankees.

Oakland started the night scoring a run in the first three innings. Seth Brown singled to center field in the first, scoring Cal Stevenson. Then in the second, Jonah Bride singled to right field, scoring Shea Langeliers. Finally, in the third, Sean Murphy blasted a solo home run to dead center field. Plus, Arihara worked out of two on-base situations in every one of the three innings. During the fourth, the Rangers got a two-out single by Nathaniel Lowe. Jonah Heim followed with a double that barely missed a home run. However, Tony Kemp threw on a relay to Elvis Andrus to Murphy, and the tag got Lowe (or at least according to the home plate umpire Jeff Nelson). It appeared the Rangers didn't get their challenge in on time, and the out at home stood. "We were thinking about challenging. I was waiting for the replay. The umpires told us it was a hard twenty [and] the time was dwelling down. [We] didn't get a definitive answer in time and we basically ran out of time," Tony Beasley said after the game. "I could have challenged it anyhow. I know Adam and I trust him. If he's thinking about it that long it’s probably a low probability play and after we looked at it with the angle he has, I don't know what would have happened. Very slim it would have been overturned."

In the fifth inning, Texas loaded the bases for Marcus Semien with one out. Semien lifted a fly ball to foul ground. Leody Taveras from third tried tagging and then tried going back to third. However, the Athletics caught him in a rundown, and the scoring opportunity ceased. "I saw the quick throw form the outfielder and I thought I don't have a chance at home. When I turned to go back to third, I saw Duran there, that's why I stayed in the rundown," Leody Taveras said. "[Ragsdale] said tag so when I saw the quick throw to home I said oh ***." The Rangers picked up a run in the sixth on a Jonah Heim infield single, scoring Adolis García and cutting the Athletics' lead to 3-1. However, with two on, Taveras and Charlie Culberson struck out to end the threat. Oakland extended their lead in the seventh on a two-run homer by Elvis Andrus to left field. Jonah Heim nearly missed a home run in the eighth and the Rangers couldn't get anything in the ninth. They fell to the Athletics in game two.

Kohei Arihara started slowly. The Athletics hit him hard in the first three innings allowing seven hits and three runs. However, in the final 2.2 innings, Arihara allowed one hit, one walk, and three strikeouts. Kohei's night ended with three runs, eight hits, three walks, six strikeouts, and a hit batter in his 5.2 innings. "If I can get into a groove earlier on in the first inning, the results would have been different," Ariahra said. "I made sure to keep communication with the pitching coaches and Jonah Heim to pitch comfortably." Taylor Hearn finished the sixth inning by striking out Cal Stevenson but allowed a single and a homer in the seventh. Garrett Richards pitched two quality innings on Tuesday. He allowed one hit and one walk while facing eight batters.
