Overview
The Rangers look to recover after a tough loss on Monday against the Rockies. While the chatter before the game was about how the Home Opener ended, the key turned the corner. “If that’s the precedent they’re going to set, are they going to make that call in game seven of the World Series,” Rangers’ manager Chris Woodward said. “That’s my question. If they’re not consistent with it, then they’re going to hear it from me.” It reminds me back to 2019 with the whole issue in Boston. Remember when Angel Hernandez denied Chris Woodward a challenge because the Rangers didn’t ask for a review in the allotted time, even though Woody did say he asked in an ample amount of time? I feel we’re going back to that road again. The incident in Boston followed where the Rangers had an inning turn on them months prior, and the Rangers won the game against the Red Sox anyway (there are differences, but similarities). For now, the dust settled, and the Rangers are ready to play the final of two against the Colorado Rockies.
“It felt good, especially since it’s the first hit of the year,” Willie Calhoun said before describing his pinch-hit homer to tie the game in the ninth. Willie went 0 for 8 in Toronto over the weekend but hit the ball hard and had no results. “I know I got it good. It was hooking towards the end; once it got past the foul pole, I knew it was fair. It was probably ten or twelve feet fair.” On Tuesday, Willie Calhoun is back in the lineup to face Rockies’ starter, Chad Kuhl. One turn of direction is how the club struggles offensively late in the game. “I thought [the at-bat] quality was decent yesterday,” Woodward told me. “There’s been times. Opening Day is always a circus; the opening series was exciting. They calm down and settle down a little bit, and then you have Opening night here. There’s a lot of hoopla. From this day on, it’s getting back to normal.” The question becomes if the Rangers’ bullpen can settle down too, allowing a run and taking a loss in each of the three defeats in 2022.
