Game Recap

Happy Martín Pérez Day everyone! Wednesday was the finale of a two-game series and a six-game road trip. The Rangers and Rockies met on Tuesday after a rough one-run loss for Texas after the club led 3-0 and 6-3. Martín came off a start in Minnesota, where he allowed two first-inning home runs but nothing after that. Then, the offense matched up against José Ureña, making his third career start against Texas. The two previous starts went about as smooth as Wednesday's outing, although it was his first loss vs. Texas. "We did a really good job grinding out at-bats and being patient with pitches that we could handle," Rangers manager Tony Beasley said. "We put the barrel on the ball pretty good today so it was a nice offensive day for us."

Nathaniel Lowe began things with a triple to right field that deflected off center fielder Wynton Bernard. It scored Corey Seager and put Texas up 1-0. Leody Taveras followed a few at-bats later with a single, scoring Lowe. Colorado had a chance to even the game in the first with two singles, but CJ Cron hit into a double play to end the first inning. The Rangers' offense exploded in the second. The inning began with six straight hits off Ureña. Seager drove in two on the double (the first extra-base hit in the inning). Next, Lowe drove in another with a single, scoring Marcus Semien. Adolis García singled home Seager, extending his hitting streak and putting the Rangers up 6-0. Then with the bases loaded again, Mark Mathias emptied the bases with a double and capped off a seven-run second inning. The eruption put the Rangers up 9-0 after two innings. "My first at-bat [Ureña] was throwing me some good sinker stuff and my next at-bat I was trying to elevate something with the bases loaded, get the runner in and luckily hit a gap," Mathias said. "Anytime you get a guy you want to get his pitch count up [and] get into the bullpen as soon as possible."

After the second inning, the Rangers and Rockies didn't get much on the offensive side. In the fifth, Ezequiel Duran doubled to start the inning and didn't move past second base. The Rockies broke the shutout in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Ryan McMahon, scoring Randal Grichuk after two straight singles to begin the inning. Bernard singled home Elehuris Montero, and Connor Joe drove in Brian Serven to cut the Rangers' lead to 9-3. Another run came through for Colorado when a wild pitch scored Bernard, which made it 9-4 Rangers. Texas added three more thanks to a three-run home run by Nathaniel Lowe, giving him five driven in on the day and extended the lead to 12-4. "[Lowe] is handling everybody," Beasley said. "He's selling off tough pitches, forcing pitches into the zone with something that he can handle." In the ninth, Duran singled home Taveras and Bubba Thompson hit into a force out for two total runs. Charlie Culberson capped off the afternoon with a two-run home run as that finished the offensive show 16-4 over the Rockies.

Martín Pérez's afternoon was smooth sailing. He ran into a minor issue in the first with two hits but settled in throughout the day. Martín finished the day with six innings, four hits, no runs, one walk, and seven strikeouts. He dealt with a lead all day and left with only eighty-four pitches against the Rockies. "He threw the ball well today [and] had everything going," Beasley said. In the high altitude he said he was good. So it was his choice and decided that six is good for him." Dennis Santana had a rough outing back from injury. The Rangers reinstated him from the injured list yesterday, but on Wednesday, he allowed five hits and four runs while only recording one out. Josh Sborz finished the seventh. Despite throwing a wild pitch scoring a run, he retired the two batters faced to limit the damage. José Lecerlc pitched a clean eighth inning striking out two hitters. Matt Moore retired the three batters he faced in the ninth to close out the afternoon.

Postgame Notes

  • The sixteen runs is a season high for the Rangers and the most runs Texas scored since May 16th, 2019 against the Royals.

  • Nathaniel Lowe picked up a career 5 RBI Wednesday. He also hit his twentifth home run, the first time in his career with a season with twenty home runs.

  • In four of the five starts for Martín Pérez in August, he's struck out seven or more hitters. It was also the fifth scoreless start and his eighteenth quality start of 2022.

  • The seven hits in the second inning are the most hits in a single inning this season for the Rangers. In addition, the seven runs tie a season high for runs in an inning. Texas scored seven in the eighth inning on May 17th at home against the Angels.

  • In three career starts vs. the Rangers, José Ureña has a 15.55 ERA (19 earned runs in 11 innings pitched).

  • The nine earned runs by Ureña is a career-high. His previous career was eight earned runs on July 29th, 2016, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He pitched 4.1 innings on that day.

  • Adolis García extended his hitting streak to twenty-one games. It's the fourth-longest streak in MLB behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (22), Paul Goldschmidt (25), and Trea Turner (26).

  • Every Rangers player had a base hit except Jonah Heim in the first two innings. In the first two innings, Heim walked twice.

  • In his first eleven at-bats with the Rangers, Mark Mathias was 5 for 11 (.455) with six RBI and three extra-base hits. In his fifty-two at-bats with Milwaukee Brewers, Mathias was 12 for 52 (.231) with eight RBI and four extra-base hits.
