Game Recap

After a crushing loss on Thursday, the Rangers returned to even the four-game series on Friday. Dallas Keuchel took the mound after a tough start on Saturday against Detroit against Nick Pivetta. In Pivetta’s last start against the Rangers, he threw seven innings and allowed one run on three hits on May 13th. “Outside of a two-run homer [and] a loud out, I can’t really think of much besides those two [plus] the double in the first inning,” Keuchel said about his last start on Saturday vs. the Tigers. “I didn’t get the cutter quite in enough. I thought there was some weak contact in there, which is going bode well for me in the future, and that’s what I made my career on.” It was much more of the same on Friday for Keuchel.

The Rangers immediately had two on to begin the game. Unfortunately, Adolis García grounded out, and Jonah Heim struck out, looking to end an early threat. Boston took the lead in the first on Xander Bogaerts RBI double, scoring Alex Verdugo. The Rangers tied the game up on Corey Seager’s line shot single to right field, scoring Bubba Thompson. Texas then had the bases loaded, but Leody Taveras grounded back to Pivetta to keep the game tied. Things took a turn in the fourth inning. Kiké Hernández doubled home Rafael Devers, and Christian Arroyo singled home two coupled with an error by Taveras. "We had a couple of opportunities [but] couldn't' get the big hit to open the game up," Beasley said. "We battled a little bit tonight, but we didn't really get much going. I thought early on we had some chances to make some things happen, just weren't able to get any timely hitting."

In the fifth, Boston added two more, all with two outs. After a walk to Bogaerts, Devers doubled in a run off the green monster, and JD Martinez singled up the middle to score Devers. Boston loaded the bases in the sixth inning to add more damage, but AJ Alexy got out of the inning without allowing a run. Finally, in the seventh, Connor Wong unloaded for his first MLB home run. The ball cleared the green monster by plenty and went outside Fenway Park. The two-run homer put the Red Sox up 9-1.

Dallas Keuchel looked good until the fourth inning. On Friday, Keuchel went 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits, seven runs, three walks, and six strikeouts on one-hundred and three pitches. All six runs allowed in the fourth and fifth came with two outs. "I thought [Dallas] threw the ball much better today," Tony Beasley said compared to his first Rangers start. "I thought he had tough luck. Especially on the ball back up in center [that] allowed two runs to score and we had some balls that just found holes. I thought it was a much better outing today. [He] had much better uses of his pitches, location, and change of speed. He pitched better than his line." AJ Alexy got some work in with 2.1 innings on Friday. He allowed a two-run home run as the runs given up, but walked two and gave up five hits on the night. Charlie Culberson finished the night by throwing another scoreless frame, though he did walk a batter on the night.
