Game Recap

The Rangers entered Tuesday on a winning high after Monday's explosion victory. Texas came off a win featuring an unreal catch, a pumped-up Major League Debut, and taking down an American League powerhouse in the Tampa Bay Rays. In addition, Texas sent Martín Pérez to the mound for his sixth start in May, making a solid case for the pitcher of the month award in the American League. After Monday's win, I asked Marcus Semien if it's the type of game that can jumpstart a team after a tragic loss Sunday. "Every day presents its own challenge. As a group, we game plan depending on who we are facing," Semien told me. "How well we execute is how well we're going to do. What we did last night and how we came out, that's what we're going to do, make it difficult for the starting pitcher." On Tuesday, the Rangers tried to do something they haven't done this year, reach the .500 mark.

Both pitchers held their oppositions scoreless through the first three innings. However, in the top of the second, Taylor Walls hit a comebacker to Martín Pérez, which hit Pérez in the leg. Rangers' trainers checked him out, and he was good enough to stay in the game. The Rangers had one lone base runner through ten batters when Rays starter Ryan Yarborough hit Josh Smith with a pitch. Texas, meantime, broke through in the fourth inning. This time to center field, Corey Seager hit another home run at Globe Life Field to score the game's first run. After a Mitch Garver double, Adolis García lifted a deep homer to left field to extend the Rangers' lead to 3-0. "It's a good visual for me, you have those places where you see the ball better, and [Globe Life Field] is one of those," Corey Seager said when asked about hitting well at home.

The Rangers threatened in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and two outs. Corey Seager lined out to left field to end the threat, but it coupled with Josh Smith hit by his second pitch of the night, Eli White bunt single, and a Marcus Semien walk. Meanwhile, the Rays' offense couldn't get anything going against Martín Pérez all night long. Rangers pitchers set down the last twenty-two Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. After the game, Martín said he turned a switch after the ball hit his shin. "As soon as [Martín] pulled his pants up to check his shin, he was like it was okay," Chris Woodward said after the game. "They woke me up, that's what he said. I was like oh boy, watch out and proceeded to go five perfect after that." Jonah said Martín was yelling, "he was excited that he got the out and made a good pitch, it was a let's go. All I know is I heard some loud noises from him," Heim said.

Martín Pérez ended his May with another gem of a night. Pérez pitched seven innings, with three hits, no runs, no walks, and five strikeouts. Interestingly, after the Walls single that hit Martín, he didn't allow a single baserunner (sixteen straight retired). "When they hit me, I started to throw more in," Pérez said. Martín said in the first two innings he threw more outside and noticed the Rays hitters hit the ball good. Then after Martín got it, he adjusted to throw more inside. In addition, John King pitched an excellent bounce-back game after Sunday's outing. King struck out one and retired the Rays in order in the eighth inning. Joe Barlow finished his May with a solid scoreless outing, picking up his eighth save in May.
