Game Recap
The Rangers and Phillies squared away in Philadelphia. It's the first time Texas was at Citizens Bank Park in eleven years and the first time the Rangers and Phillies squared away in five years. The Rangers' offense came out strong with a two-run home run by Mitch Garver off Phillies starter Ranger Suárez. "Just looking for a ball up in the middle part of the zone," Mitch Garver said after the game on his home run. "He threw me the changeup, I stayed through it, everyone slapped hands. It was great!"
However, the Phillies returned the favor against Jon Gray with three runs, aided by a double by Rhys Hoskins and a single by Didi Gregorious. Suárez held off the Rangers' offense until the fourth inning when the new father of two, Jonah Heim, launched a looping break ball to left field, tying the game at three. In the sixth, Texas was able to get to a struggling Phillies' bullpen. After Suárez allowed a single to Heim and Lowe reached on an error, Chris Woodward yielded to the left-handers. Zach Reks hit for Eli White and laced a low ball in the zone for a two-run go-ahead double. Marcus Semien followed with an RBI single, completing a three-run sixth inning. "That pitch was an inch off the ground, dug it out of there and wrapped around the corner, huge hit for [Reks]," Rangers' manager Chris Woodward said.
The Phillies crawled within two runs after JT Realmuto hit a shot off of Matt Bush to left-center field. However, Philadelphia couldn't get the big hit after the first inning. The Phillies ended the night going hitless in their final eight at-bats with runners in scoring position Tuesday.
Before the game, Texas activated Jon Gray while placing Albert Abreu on the injured list (fifteen days) with a left ankle sprain. The target pitch count for Gray was high sixty-low seventies, but three innings and sixty pitches for Gray ended his night early. Jon Gray allowed five hits, three runs, one walk, and struck out three Tuesday. "He came out healthy and he's in good shape," Rangers' manager Chris Woodward said after the game regarding Jon Gray. Brock Burke allowed singles in each of the three innings he pitched but didn't yield a run while punching out one, though he left with one out in the sixth. Dennis Santana did what Chris Woodward says he likes to do: clean up an inning as Santana polished off the sixth unscathed.
John King started the seventh with trouble, allowed a single and a double to the bottom of the order, but worked out getting Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Bryce Harper. Matt Bush allowed a solo home run to lead off the eighth inning but set down the next three Phillies' to end the inning. Joe Barlow closed the game out and gave the Rangers their third straight win.
