Game Recap
After a spirit-filled Thursday full of youth excitement, the Rangers introduced their fourth-round pick. Texas introduced Brock Porter earlier in the day. "I'm excited for this opportunity for the Rangers. They're a great organization, and I'm pumped." Brock said. "Rangers gave me the opportunity that nobody else did, and excited for that and the future." Next, the Rangers turned to Glenn Otto for Friday's game to take the mound. Throughout the season, Otto has had his struggles and signs of euphoria. I asked Rangers manager Chris Woodward if he feels Otto was trending in the positive direction. "He's got some good starts while it's just a little erratic, command-wise, [and] kind of pitching all over the place," Woody said. "When he's dialed in that slider sharp and the curveball, and he's got some decent fastball command with the four-seamer and sinker, he's effective. It's all about execution."
The Rangers' offense struck for a run in the first inning on an Adolis García RBI single to right-center field. It scored Jonah Heim as Texas took advantage of a couple of walks from White Sox starter Dylan Cease. The Sox tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Seby Zavala, scoring Yasmani Grandal. In the following inning, Eloy Jiménez launched a 437-foot home run to the White Sox bullpen giving Chicago a 2-1 lead. Chicago had a leadoff double in the fifth inning, but Otto didn't allow the runner to advance. In the sixth, the Sox had two on with two outs as Otto struck out Moncada to end the frame. Meanwhile, Bubba Thompson singled in the second for his first out of infield single. "[I] come up here and they're the best in the game at the highest level but you have to know you can do the same thing," Bubba Thompson told me.
The Rangers got a runner into scoring position in the seventh inning, but Brad Miller struck out looking against Joe Kelly to end the threat. The Sox tried for a steal of second, but Jiménez was thrown out at second base by Jonah Heim while José Abreu struck out ending the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the eighth, Texas had two on and one out and the bases loaded and two outs. Texas squandered those chances and left the bases loaded. The Rangers couldn't get anything in the ninth against Liam Hendricks and the Rangers fall in another one-run contest. "I thought our approach was pretty good for the most part," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said about the at-bats against Dylan Cease. "Can't be perfect against a guy like that. His stuff is too elite. I thought we did a decent job limiting our swings on pitches we can hit."
Glenn Otto had a nice outing on Friday. Despite the home run and a few free baserunners, Glenn held a tough offense in check by allowing two runs, four hits, one walk, one hit by pitch, and striking out seven. The ninety-seven pitches are the second most Glenn threw this season (May 30th against the Rays). "I was on the attack all night tonight," Glenn Otto said. "Jonah did a great job calling the game, we were on the same page all night for the most part." He went toe-to-toe with Cease all night. "You want to play against the best and compete against the best," Glenn told me. "I'm competing against anybody that gets in the box. I'm not trying to outdo the Dylan Ceases , the whoever I'm lined up against. It's definitely fun competing against those guys but at the same time I know what my job is and I'm sticking with that."
Josh Sborz threw two quality innings. He allowed one base hit in each of the two frames while striking out three on forty pitches. Sborz has gone five straight scoreless relief appearances since June 1st with nine strikeouts. "Sborz was electric [tonight]. [He] threw the crap out of it," Woodward said. "That's the best I've seen Sborz. It's encouraging with the stuff he has." José Leclerc came into the ninth inning and retired the side striking out the last two hitters he faced.
