Game Recap

The Rangers limp into the All-Star break trying to salvage a game from the Seattle Mariners. Two of the three losses were by one run, and the other was a close game with two outs in the eighth inning. The ball club is seeing a stretch where twenty of the last twenty-two games are within three runs at some point in the final two innings. Before the game, the Rangers made a roster move by optioning Sam Huff to Triple-A Round Rock and recalling Nick Solak. Glenn Otto took the mound to close out the unofficial first half while the Mariners started Chris Flexen, who Seattle limited due to short rest. We need a few days off to collect our thoughts and let our bodies rest. "We got beat today," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said about Sunday's finale. "In the last couple of games I felt like we could have won, but today we got beat."

The Mariners had a few chances early. In the first inning, Meibrys Viloria threw out Julio Rodríguez, trying to steal second base. Glenn Otto allowed another baserunner, but Seattle couldn't score. In the second inning, Otto got hit by a broken bat and stayed in the game, getting out of a third-inning jam with nothing coming across. In the bottom of the third, Marcus Semien blasted a 418-foot home run to left field to put Texas up first 1-0. However, the shutdown inning became an issue again. Cal Raleigh homered to right field, putting the Mariners up 2-1. The Rangers had opportunities in the fourth and sixth innings. Josh Smith grounded out with the bases loaded in a one-run game. Then in a two-run game, Leody Taveras doubled with one out. Unfortunately, Kole Calhoun and Brad Miller struck out to end the scoring chance in the sixth.

The Mariners made the most of their opportunities in the seventh. Seattle put together four straight hits against Richards, including a Rodríguez two-run double and a France RBI single, extending the Mariners' lead to 6-1. Corey Seager delivered with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Viloria, but again the Rangers couldn't convert more with runners in scoring position. Texas went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position to ultimately fall as Seattle swept the Rangers four games in Arlington. "I know we didn't finish off great, but a little rest, resurgence, a second wind [and in the] second half we come up guns a blazing," Woodward said. "The important thing is that we are learning along the way and how to be better in everything and everyway."

Glenn Otto's six innings had an upside to them. Otto allowed two home runs and hit two batters but only walked one. The Mariners got five hits off Otto and struck out four times. "Overall, I wish I could have had a couple back, but I felt like I had five pitches where I wanted them today," Otto said. "I felt like I was attacking most of the day and putting pressure on them."

Garrett Richards came into the seventh as Seattle blasted him for four hits and three runs after Richards retired the leadoff hitter. Dennis Santana came in to salvage the seventh and retired both hitters he faced. José Leclerc walked one, but retired the Mariners in his inning of work in the eighth. Brock Burke battled in the ninth with nineteen pitches. Sam Haggerty picked up a leadoff single, but Burke retired the side after that.

Postgame Notes

  • The Mariners set a MLB record for the longest winning streak heading into the All-Star break (fourteen straight wins).

  • The Rangers are eight games below .500 for the first time since April 29th's loss to the Atlanta Braves.

  • Leody Taveras ends the All-Star break going 22 for 56 (.393) with nine doubles, three home runs, and fifteen RBI since June 27th (eighteen games).

  • Cal Raleigh leads all MLB catchers with thirteen home runs in ABs, where he's listed as the catcher in the lineup.

  • Corey Seager extended his hitting streak to ten games with his third-inning single.

  • Rangers lose four straight to end an All-Star break for the first time since 2014. They lost eight straight before the All-Star break.

  • Glenn Otto's seven hit batters are fourth most in MLB among players who threw sixty-one innings or less. Nick Lodolo of the Reds is the only starter tied or ahead of Otto.

  • Otto continues his streak of seventeen straight starts with at least one walk. His MLB debut on August 27th, 2021, against Houston was the only MLB start he didn't walk a batter.
