Game Recap

The Rangers came back home after an exhausting series against the Chicago White Sox in Chicago. Before the game, Texas had to make a move for Eli White. The Rangers placed White on the injured list with a wrist fracture, and the club called up Leody Taveras. Leody said he worked on adjustments at the plate heading into Spring Training, including height, swing path, and others. One key for Leody is his confidence. “I feel confident,” Taveras said. “At the end of the day, it’s a baseball game. I understand bad days [and] good days. I need to keep doing my best.” Taylor Hearn took the mound against the Astros while Houston sent Cristian Javier.

Houston immediately came out of the gate with an RBI single by Yordan Alvarez in the opening inning. Following in the second inning, Mauricio Dubón singled to score Jeremy Peña. Michael Brantley lined a single to Adolis García in right field, but García threw a strike to Jonah Heim, where Heim gunned it to Corey Seager, getting Brantley. Dubón scored, but the inning ended, and Houston led 3-0 after two innings. The Rangers cracked the scoreboard with a Kole Calhoun sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Rangers had the bases loaded and none out in the third, but the Calhoun sac fly was all they could get after Javier.

In the top of the fifth inning, it appeared Yordan Alvarez had another homer against the Rangers. However, Adolis García robbed Alvarez of a two-run homer, keeping the game at 3-1 Houston. "It's pretty dang good defensively and Leody stepped right in tonight and Kole playing left," Brad Miller said. "That outfield is pretty cool." In the bottom of the seventh, the Rangers crawled within a run when García brought Brad Miller home. Then in the eighth inning, the Rangers got a rally started with a Jonah Heim single. With a runner at third base, Ezequiel Duran tied the game up with a single to center field. Quickly after, Brad Miller gave the Rangers the lead with a single to left with the infield in, erasing a 3-0 deficit after two innings. Texas added another run with a RBI groundout by Corey Seager. "You're not going to have it every day," Miller said about the team manufacturing runs instead of home runs. "The guys on the other team are good on the mound and they roll out some big dogs at us and you have to find a way."

Taylor Hearn walked three and allowed seven hits in his outing Monday. It trickled to three runs, though Taylor was able to strike out three Astros on the night. "I notice teams are a lot more aggressive against me so I have to be aggressive back," Taylor said. Jesus Tinoco came in for relief and struck out another batter, retiring two hitters and getting out of the sixth inning with no harm. Brock Burke entered in the seventh inning and shut the Astros down six up and six down on twenty-four pitches. Burke struck out one batter in the two innings of work. Matt Moore entered the ninth and retired the side in order. Moore picked up his first career MLB save Monday. "I try to not feel like I'm doing too much in the bullpen and handle on getting three outs," Matt Moore said on pitching the ninth Monday. "It's a new feeling and happy that it was three up and three down."

Postgame Notes

  • The Rangers have hit a sacrifice fly in three straight games. Before Saturday in Chicago, they didn’t have a sacrifice fly in their previous fifteen games.

  • It took Jesus Tinoco six hitters for him to record an out, not by a strikeout (a Martin Maldonado groundout).

  • For the first time in his career, Adolis García drew a walk in three straight games. He’s walked four times in the past three games.

  • Leody Taveras picked up his first hit of the season in his first at-bat. In 2021, he started the year 0 for 14.

  • In all seven of Cristian Javier’s starts against Texas, he’s allowed three or fewer runs.

  • Monday was the first outing for Brock Burke, where he pitched two or more innings and didn’t allow a baserunner.

  • The Rangers were 2-23 when trailing after seven innings entering Monday.

  • Marcus Semien has reached base four times in three of his last six games.
