Overview
After Sunday’s loss to the Angels, there was no sense of panic in the Rangers’ clubhouse, despite dropping three straight to close out the week. The Rangers start a six-game road west coast road trip on Tuesday after Monday's off day. Texas is 2-7, dropping five of their last six on the last homestand. The good news is that the Rangers get Jon Gray back on the mound after missing ten days with a blister issue he suffered on Opening Day. Gray dominated the Blue Jays the first time around, but the blister acted up late in the third inning of his outing. Eventually, he got walloped in the fourth, and his first start as a Ranger ended prematurely.
Meanwhile, a change of scenery may be the best for the Rangers' offense. In the past two games against the Angels, Rangers manager Chris Woodward said that the team didn't play well to win at the Major League level. Therefore, taking a day, recovering, hitting the road, and going somewhere else for a week may be the best-case scenario for the club.
On the other side, the Rangers face the Seattle Mariners' ace, Robbie Ray. The Mariners signed Ray to a five-year $115 million contract in the offseason, around the time Texas signed Marcus Semien and Corey Seager. It'll be Robbie Ray's third start of 2022, where he had okay moments the previous two starts. In his first outing as a Seattle Mariner, Ray went seven innings and allowed one run but walked four Minnesota Twins that day. Last Wednesday, Robbie Ray allowed six runs, ten hits, and three home runs against the Chicago White Sox in a loss in Chicago. Tuesday will be the 2021's American League Cy-Young Award winner's first outing at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. After dropping four straight between Minnesota and Chicago, the Seattle Mariners have won three of their last four games, including a series win against the Houston Astros over the weekend.
During the last home stand, I asked a few bullpen guys how they were feeling and if Brock Burke has a chance in the rotation.
Pregame Notables
To make room for Jon Gray, the Rangers designated Greg Holland for assignment.
The Mariners have won seventeen of their last twenty games at T-Mobile Park against the Rangers dating to July 22nd, 2019.
Jon Gray is making his third start lifetime against the Mariners. On July 14th, 2018, the last came where Gray allowed one run in 7.1 innings and struck out six.
Tuesday will be Robbie Ray's seventh start against the Rangers. The last came last year after the All-Star break in Buffalo. Ray pitched 6.2 scoreless innings allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out six.
Robbie Ray had two previous starts in Seattle (one as an Arizona Diamondback and one as a Toronto Blue Jay). Both starts are nearly identical, where he pitched seven innings, two runs, one home run, and eight strikeouts in each outing. However, he did allow six hits in two walks in 2015's outing, while in 2021, Ray allowed five hits and walked one.
Seattle won thirteen of nineteen in 2021 against the Rangers. Four of the six Rangers' wins were by one run, and two of those one-run wins were by walk-off homers by Jonah Heim.
The Rangers are 0-6 when hitting fewer than two home runs.
Adolis García was one of eight non-designated hitters to hit a home run Sunday which was the fewest on a day with fourteen or more games since April 20, 1991
