Game Recap
Sunday was the three-game finale between the Rangers and Rays, concluding their seven-game season series. Glenn Otto took the hill coming off a quality start in Miami against the Marlins with six innings and two runs. He faced the Rays in Arlington on May 30th and threw six innings, allowing one run (and got help from Eli White that night). Tampa Bay sent the former Ranger, Jeffery Springs, on Sunday, making his second start against the Rangers this season. On June 1st, Springs allowed two runs in five innings while striking out seven (Sam Huff and Nathaniel Lowe homered).
The Rangers put a little pressure (with help from the Rays) on Springs when Marcus Semien reached on an error and moved to second on a Corey Seager fly-out. Nathaniel Lowe flew out, and Adolis García struck out to end the first. Josh Jung continued his reign with an arching solo home run to left field to put the Rangers up 1-0. However, the Rays went back-to-back jacks on Glenn Otto. Christian Bethancourt and José Siri went deep off Otto to give Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. In the third, the Rays got three straight hits off Otto, including an RBI double by Jonathan Aranda and an RBI single by Manuel Margot to extend the Tampa Bay lead to 4-1.
The Rangers started the sixth with a bang on Corey Seager's record-breaking thirty-first home run to cut the Rays' lead to 4-2. Josh Jung sliced a single up the middle, scoring Adolis thanks to another Rays error. "I've been impressed with [Josh Jung]," Beasley said. "He's been attacking the game offensively and defensively. He's not shying away from any matchup [and] he's competing. With two on, Sam Huff struck out as the Rangers couldn't tie the game up in the sixth. A couple of singles and two walks resulted in a run in the sixth for Tampa Bay. A 3-2 payoff walk by Brock Burke scored Bethancourt on the free pass from Taylor Walls, extending the Rays' lead to 5-3. Burke got Yandy Díaz to line out to limit the damage to one run. The Rangers couldn't get anything against the Rays bullpen including former Ranger, Pete Fairbanks, striking out two to end the game.
Glenn Otto got walloped on Sunday. He left a lot of pitches in the middle of the plate. Six of the seven hits Otto allowed touched the center square of the plate, including the three-extra base, hits Glenn allowed. In the afternoon, Otto struck out three, allowed four runs, but did not walk a batter in his 3.1 innings. "[Otto] jus didn't seem to have it today. We tried to stick with him as long as we could, but trying to win the series and we had to have a short leash today," Tony Beasley said.
John King was fantastic in his work Sunday. King retired five Rays on fifteen pitches with one strikeout. Brock Burke struggled somewhat, allowing two hits and two walks, resulting in a run on thirty-six pitches. "[Brock] had two outs kind of quick and I don't know on the play at first base, he wasn't the same after that. He said he was fine when we went out there, but kind of lost the strikezone a little bit for us," Beasley said. Jonathan Hernández made quick work of the Rays in eleven pitches. He retired Tampa Bay in order picking up one strikeout. Matt Moore allowed a double, but struck out two in his inning of work.
Postgame Notes
Rangers haven't won a series in their last nine (0-6-3). Their last series win came between August 19-23 at Minnesota vs. the Twins.
Corey Seager's thirty-first home run is the most by an MLB left-handed shortstop. It breaks the previous thirty home run record by Brad Miller with the Rays in 2016.
Marcus Semien has reached by a walk or hit in twenty-five straight road games. It's the second-longest streak of his career (April 20th to June 13th, 2021, where he reached safely in twenty-seven straight road games). In addition, it's the longest streak by a Rangers player since Shin-Soo Choo reached safely in twenty-nine straight road games (May 13th to July 27th, 2018).
Sunday was only the sixth game (in fifty-six) after the All-Star break where Nathaniel Lowe did not reach base.
Sunday broke a string of 28 straight MLB starts that Glenn Otto walked at least one hitter. The only start he didn't walk a batter was his MLB debut (August 27th, 2021), where he threw five scoreless against the Astros.
The fifty-seven pitches by Otto are the smallest in his MLB career. It's the fewest overall since June 21st, when Otto made a rehab start when he returned from COVID.
In ten games, Josh Jung has six extra-base hits (three home runs and three doubles). 15% of Jung's at-bats result in an extra-base hit, although 45% of his at-bats result in a strikeout.
John King has a 2.03 ERA (three earned runs in thirteen and third innings) on the road since June 12th. All seven outings have come in multi-inning roles.
