Game Recap
On Sunday, the Rangers and Tigers concluded their three-game and season series. Kohei Arihara took the mound after a successful start in Minnesota his last time out. Airhart threw six shutout innings against the Twins last Sunday without walking a batter. Meanwhile, the Rangers offense took on Drew Hutchinson with variations to the lineup, with Jonah Heim getting rest. Before the game, Tony Beasley talked about the consistency at the top of the lineup. "I haven't had any negative feedback," Beasley said. "Usually, if it's not good, you'll hear something negatively, whether a jab, sarcastic statement or something. I think the guys like knowing where they're going to be."
Things started quickly and painless for both pitchers, with a scoreless first inning each. Then in the second inning, Arihara hit Eric Haase with a two-strike pitch which later scored on a Kerry Carpenter double. Jeimer Candelario followed with a two-run home run which propelled Detroit to a 3-0 lead three batters into the second. The Rangers had a chance to answer back, but with two on and one out, Hutchinson struck out Brad Miller and Meibrys Viloria. In the third, the Tigers loaded the bases, all with two outs. Arihara walked Kody Clemens to score Haase to add another run. Detroit added two more in the fourth with a two-run single by Harold Castro off Brett Martin. Martin entered the game with second and third and one out.
Detroit loaded the bases against Burke in the sixth. That's when Harold Castro unloaded the bases with a three-run double to left field over the head of Kole Calhoun. It extended the Tigers' lead to 9-0. The Rangers got two runs back on back-to-back solo home runs by Corey Seager and Nathaniel Lowe. Seager reached a career-high in home runs while Lowe continued to add to his career high. Texas added three in the eighth. First, Adolis García grounded out scoring Marcus Semien and then Kole Calhoun launched a two-run home run to the Rangers bullpen to cut the Tigers lead to 9-5. The Rangers made some heavy noise in the ninth inning. Semien doubled down the left field line scoring Ezequiel Duran and Seager hit another home run to cut the game to one run. Unfortunately, Adolis struck out and Calhoun flew out to end what would have been a magical comeback on Sunday. "At the time, it was [about] to win the game. I was trying to hit something far or in the gap,"Adolis said about the ninth inning at-bat. "At the moment, I didn't think about [the hitting streak], I just want to win the game."
Kohei Arihara started fine after the first, but the hit-by-pitch set a bad tone later through the start. Airhart left after 3.1 innings but allowed eight hits, six runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Arihara had a thirty-seven-pitch second and a twenty-nine-pitch third on the afternoon. "I think my stuff was good today, [but] my command was spotty so it was easier for them to see what was coming, Arihara said. "From playing catch in the bullpens, reflecting over today and going over basic things make sure my command gets down," Kohei said in what he wants to accomplish in the final month of the season.
Brett Martin came in and allowed a base hit to score two but retired the next two hitters to limit the fourth inning to two runs. Brock Burke pitched a clean fifth inning, but in the sixth walked two and allowed a single. It was a three-run double that did the damage to Burke's line. José Leclerc's seventh inning featured a base hit, but Leclerc struck out two batters and didn't allow a run to come across. Matt Moore retired the side in order while striking out one batter in his inning. Jonathan Hernández allowed a base hit in his inning, but stranded the runner. It was a scoreless ninth for Hernández to close the pitching afternoon.
