Game Recap
After a quick but rough loss on Monday, the Rangers and Yankees met up for game one of a day/night doubleheader. It was the second doubleheader of the season between Texas and New York (May 8th due to rainouts on May 6th and May 7th). For game one, Jon Gray got the nod making his final start of the 2022 campaign. Meanwhile, the Yankees sent out Jameson Taillon, whom the Rangers did not see in early May. "We haven't been able to come through, get timely hits, big hits," Tony Beasley said on the offenses' struggles the past week. "We haven't had successful offensively."
Game one started briskly with Aaron Judge grounding out to Corey Seager on the afternoon's first pitch. However, the Yankees did pick up a run on an Oswaldo Cabrera solo home run to right field to put New York up 1-0. The Rangers followed their first, putting together a two-out rally against Jameson Taillon. After Marcus Semien and Corey Seager lined out, Nathaniel Lowe singled, Taillon hit Adolis García by a pitch, Josh Jung singled both home, and the Rangers loaded the bases. Adolis scored as Marwin Gonzalez threw the ball casually to second base. Leody Taveras popped out to third base with the bases loaded to end the frame. Aaron Judge put the ball in the air in the third inning, but it was a lazy flyout to right field on a 97 MPH fastball away.
The Yankees took the lead in the fifth with a Marwin single to left field, but the Rangers countered with Adolis García's two-run home run, putting him at 100 RBI on the season. "I was very antsy about getting the two RBIs, but I was waiting for it for a while and I feel good about it and super proud of myself for having a great year," Adolis said. "I feel like it's going to help be more confident next season and come here with more confident for the next year." The Yankees took the lead in the eighth. First, Kyle Higashioka homered to center field, nearly missing Taveras’ glove. Then Judge singled, Rizzo was hit by a pitch, and Harrison Bader singled to left to score Judge, putting New York up 5-4. Then with second and third and two outs, Aaron Hicks struck out and Peraza grounded out to keep it a one-run game. Judge got one more at-bat in game one, but grounded out to Seager again to end his game one. The Rangers had the tying run at second base with Leody Taveras, but on a Marcus Semien soft lineout, Gonzalez doubled off Taveras at second and the game ended. "It's a bad baserunning mistake, we can't make that mistake and I guess he thought it was going to fall in [and] didn't think it was as hit as hard as it was." Tony Beasley said. "It was the wrong read and its not the way we wanted the game to end."
Jon Gray finished strong against a playoff team Tuesday. He allowed two home runs but limited them to solo home runs. On the afternoon, Gray threw six innings and allowed four hits, three runs, no walks, and three strikeouts. "The pitches individual have gotten better this year, the fastball and slider, but I feel like I've been bad in the first inning. That's something I want to focus on for next year. Early on it was walks, [but] we did a better job of not walking people in the second half," Gray said. "It's early in games that has been my achilles heel all year so I would like to throw up more zeroes and I think that's going to help."
Brock Burke threw a clean seventh inning and allowed only one hit. But in the eighth, Burke yielded a home run, a hit by pitch, and two hits equaling to two runs on his ledger. It's the third straight outing Burke has allowed at least one earned run. Dennis Santana came in and did his thing. Santana retired the two batters faced (did allow a stolen base) and kept the game close. 15 of the last 16 inherited runners have not scored against Dennis Santana. Jonathan Hernández walked one and threw a scoreless frame to end the Rangers pitching for the first game.
Postgame Notes
Tuesday was the fourth start this season where Jon Gray did not walk a batter (June 17th at DET, July 13th vs. OAK, and September 12th at MIA).
In his final two starts, Jon Gray allowed five home runs. He allowed six home runs in his previous nine starts.
In three career starts vs. the Rangers, Jameson Taillon has a 5.94 ERA (11 earned runs in 16.2 innings). Taillon walked two batters in each of the three starts and allowed four home runs total.
Adolis García reached 100 RBI for the first time in his career and is the first Rangers player with 100 RBI since Nomar Mazara in 2017.
Leody Taveras doubled in the sixth inning. Previous to that double, Leody was 2 for his last 26 at-bats with ten strikeouts.
Oswald Peraza hit his first MLB home run in the second inning Tuesday
Aaron Judge is 4 for 18 this season against Rangers pitching. All four hits are singles, he's walked twice, scored three runs, and struck out four times. The four total bases is tied for the lowest this season vs. any team Judge faced (Cincinnati Reds).
Adolis is the third Rangers player in franchise history to hit 25 home runs, steal 25 bases, and 100 RBI. He joins Alfonso Soriano (2005) and Iván “Pudge” Rodríguez (1999).
