Game Recap

Rangers began a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Globe Life Field. The Red Sox entered Friday, losing eight of their last ten and hosting the American League's third-lowest winning percentage. Meanwhile, the Rangers' victory Thursday against the Royals put Texas in a stretch where they won seven of their last ten. However, we know Friday the 13th can cause some chaos and make things unpredictable. The Rangers' offense struggled on Friday, but it was less than predictable with the team's offensive scuffles the past few weeks.

The Red Sox and Rangers' offenses quieted early. Boston scored a run in the third inning with two outs on a Rafael Devers single. Dane Dunning walked Kiké Hernández with two outs, then Hernández advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on the Devers single. Then, things got out of hand for Dane Dunning in the sixth innings. Boston picked up three straight hits with one out as Alex Verdugo doubled to score J.D. Martinez. Trevor Story followed with a sacrifice fly, and Franchy Cordero doubled to score Verdugo. The Cordero doubled-ended Dunning's night while Christian Vasquez singled to score Franchy putting together a four-run frame for the Red Sox.

Boston added two more in the seventh inning as Xander Bogaerts drove in Devers and Martinez with a single to right field off former Red Sox pitcher Garrett Richards. Texas avoided the shutout in the seventh with a double by Kole Calhoun, advancing to third on an error by Kiké and scoring on a wild pitch by Pivetta. The seventh-inning sequence was the only blemish on the right for Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta. Pivetta threw seven innings, four strikeouts, three hits, one run, and one walk. "I've seen [Kole ] make some adjustment," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said after the game. "It was a matter of time, he's a good fastball hitter, he's a good hitter. It's nice to see him have some results. We need him to be productive for us."

Dane Dunning showed lights of how he's looked in his last few starts. Dunning pitched a scoreless two frames and allowed one hit and one run until the sixth. However, the blasted sixth ended Dunning's night with 5.2 innings, five runs, six hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. "I didn't execute pitches when I needed to," Dane said after the game. "I wanted to stay in there to finish the [sixth] inning. I didn't give myself an opportunity to stay in that game. I felt like I could have finished it out, but I didn't give Woody a reason to keep me in there." Brett Martin entered, allowed the Vasquez hit to score a run, and got out of the sixth inning. Garrett Richards allowed two runs in the seventh inning while throwing a scoreless eighth inning, as Richards faced his old team he spent 2021 with. Josh Sborz entered the ninth inning with his first work since he came off the injured list. Sborz allowed a hit, a walk, and a strikeout without allowing a run.

Postgame Notes

  • Friday was the first outing Dane Dunning allowed five runs since August 20th, 2021, in Boston against the Red Sox. Dunning has allowed five or more earned runs four times in his MLB career.

  • Dunning pitched a scoreless first inning for the fifth consecutive start.

  • Red Sox J.D. Martinez reached base in thirty straight games, the longest active streak in MLB. In addition, Martinez currently owns a fourteen-game hitting streak.

  • Nathaniel Lowe singled in the fifth inning, snapping a 0 for 22 streak dated to Wednesday, May 4th.

  • Kole Calhoun has a hit in six of his last seven games. Friday was the first multi-hit game in that stretch, his second multi-hit game of the season, and his first three-hit game as a Ranger.

  • Rangers' Garrett Richards has allowed two runs in three of his last four outings. Before that, he went five straight scoreless outings.

  • After allowing two or more runs in each start (five starts), Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta has allowed one run in his last two starts.

  • Red Sox Kiké Hernández walked twice for the first time in 2022. He had ten multi-walk games in the past two seasons.
