Game Recap
The Rangers and White Sox started a three-game series in Chicago Friday. Before the game, the Rangers had to make a few more moves with a couple of players heading to the COVID-19 injured list. Friday's original starter, Glenn Otto and Mitch Garver hit the COVID-19 list while the club brought up Jesus Tonoco and Tyson Miller. Since Otto had to head to the COVID list, the Rangers had to go with a bullpen game on Friday. "We're okay with the guys we have here," Chris Woodward said before the game. "It shouldn't be an issue; it's more about tomorrow and the next day depending on how the night goes." Meanwhile, the White Sox had Davis Martin as their primary pitcher, who came in after the White Sox used Renaldo López as an opener.
After both teams pulled their openers, the White Sox struck first in the second inning. Yasmani Grandal singled up the middle off of Garrett Richards, scoring Jake Burger. The offenses held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning. Nathaniel Lowe launched a laser to right field that hit off the tip-top of the foul pole, tying the game at one a piece. In the sixth inning, the Rangers took the lead, with Adolis García going deep to center field on his eleventh home run. The White Sox tied the game up in the sixth. A Sam Huff error on a steal of third attempt by Luis Robert, scoring Robert, tied the game.
Texas had a threat chance in the seventh inning. Nathaniel Lowe doubled with one out, but Brad Miller struck out, and Ezequiel Duran lined out to end any threat. After the game, I asked Nathaniel Lowe about the struggles with runners in scoring position and if it crosses the mind when those situations come and the team is struggling. "You try not to let it happen, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't," Lowe said. "But that's part of what happens, you press and things don't get done. When you're rollign and getting guys in it's not really a thought."
The White Sox took the lead in the seventh inning when AJ Pollock lined a double over Brad Miller's head in left field. The Rangers answered in the eighth inning with a Corey Seager shot to right field, belting the Rangers' third home run of the night. Seager's home run tied the game at three. Chicago returned the favor as Yasmandi Grandal delivered his third run batted in on the night. It was a double to right field scoring two and putting Chicago up 5-3 in the eighth. Josh Harrison followed with another hit with a runner in scoring position. Danny Mendick puts the finishing touches with a two-run home run to gather a five-run frame in the eighth for Chicago.
Matt Bush was the first up in the line on a bullpen Friday. Bush struggled slightly with command on a four-pitch walk. However, he got Luis Robert to hit into a double play and got José Abreu down on strikes. Bush pitched a scoreless first. Then Garrett Richards followed with two innings. He allowed two hits, one run, and two strikeouts.
Tyson Miller made his Rangers debut on Friday. Miller pitched two great innings but ran into issues with walks in the sixth. Miller allowed one hit, one run (unearned), and two walks on thirty-five pitches. "We were trying to get everything we could out of him," Chris Woodward said. "[Tyson] going those couple of innings helped us and saved us and gave us a chance to win the game. I thought he did great." Dennis Santana finished the sixth inning leaving his inherited runner on base. However, he allowed a double and a run in his full inning of work. John King had a rough outing in the eighth inning. He allowed six hits and five runs with two outs recorded on a double play.
