Game Recap

Rangers entered Sunday trying to do something they haven't done since the second week of May of last year, get to .500. The last time Texas hit the .500 mark was May 9th, 2021, when the club went to 18-18 on a Rangers' blow-up against Seattle. Afterward, the club turmoil started with the two-game series against the Giants, and it went downhill. Dane Dunning was also the starting pitcher of that Mother's Day game against Seattle. Then, the Athletics sent a familiar foe in James Kaprileian to the bump for his seventh career start against Texas. Finally, the Rangers tried to sweep the Athletics on the road in a four-game series for the first time in forty-five years. Unfortunately, a sloppy game throughout the afternoon, especially at the end doomed the Rangers Sunday. "We got to flush that one," Chris Woodward said. "We've been playing good baseball up until today. We have to get on the plane and get home and continue to play good baseball;; because I won't let that carry over."

Corey Seager got things going with a solo homer in the opening inning; it's the second straight game where Seager homered. Brad Miller went the other way for a solo home run in the third inning as Texas took a 2-0 lead. Heading to the fifth inning, the Rangers got Kaprileian out of the game. Nathaniel Lowe singled, Andy Ibáñez doubled, and Brad Miller singled to score another run. Marcus Semien added another tally on an RBI single to extend the Rangers' lead to 4-0. Oakland broke through in the fifth after squandering chances throughout the first four innings with a Sean Murphy double down the left-field line. The Athletics added another run on an Elvis Andrus double off Dennis Santana. The Rangers' third error of the afternoon scored the A's third run of the game as Cristian Pache reached. The ball popped out of Ibáñez's glove as Oakland crawled within 4-3.

Both teams had significant threats in the seventh inning. Texas had two on and none out, along with the bases loaded and two outs, but couldn't capitalize. Ibáñez tried scoring on an Eli White bunt attempt, but Murphy's tag got Andy (according to replay, the call confirmed). Oakland had two on and none out but couldn't score either thanks to two Burke strikeouts, and Matt Bush closed the seventh inning door. Oakland's offense took over in the eighth inning with two straight singles to begin the inning. After Chad Pinder scored Tony Kemp, Sheldon Neuse drove in the go-ahead run on a low throw by Marcus Semien scoring Laureano. The Rangers tied the game up in the ninth as Marcus Semien walked, stole second (with no one covering), went to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.

Dane Dunning's outing was fantastic in the grand scheme of things Sunday. Yes, he was wild, he allowed a boatload of baserunners, but Dane didn't allow the big inning to consume him. Dunning escaped a two-on and none-out jam and bases loaded and one-out jam in the first. In the second inning, Oakland didn't score with runners on second and third and two outs, and in the fourth inning didn't yield a run with the bases loaded and none out. However, he did allow an RBI double to Murphy and left in the fifth inning after allowing a walk to Luis Barrera. Dunning went 4.1 innings and allowed seven hits, one run, three walks, two wild pitches, and struck out five. "Dane pitched his butt off," Woodward said. "To get out of the jams that he was in was able to get through those, but had a high pitch count in the fifth inning."

Dennis Santana came in with two on in the fifth and allowed his first two inherited runners to score. Santana's line didn't show a run but allowed a double by Elvis Andrus. Dennis entered Sunday with oppositions 0 for 10 in inherited runners scoring. Brock Burke entered in the sixth inning with a double play and a walk but allowed another walk and a single in the seventh. He picked up back-to-back strikeouts, but Woodward lifted Burke for Bush in the seventh. Matt Bush got Pache to fly out to clean up the seventh inning work. John King struggled in the eighth inning with three hits, two runs, one earned run, and one walk. Brett Martin allowed two hits in the ninth inning, allowing the walk off victory for Oakland.
