Game Recap
The Rangers and Rays concluded their four-game series Thursday afternoon. After Texas squandered a chance to go over.500 with Wednesday's Tampa Bay comeback, they turned to the daytime owl, Taylor Hearn, against a familiar face, Corey Kluber. It was Kluber's first start in Arlington since his no-hitter with the Yankees. For Taylor Hearn, it was about building after a decent outing in Oakland. Hearn pitched the longest in terms of innings and gave up three runs (two earned) against the Athletics.
After an efficient first inning for Hearn, the Rays' offense kicked it into high gear in the second. Francisco Mejía led off the second with a double. He later scored on a Vidal Bruján double as Tampa Bay drew the game's first run. In the third inning, the Rays picked up another run on a Yandy Díaz single and finally scored their third run of the game on the third walk of the inning. Issac Paredes drew a walk, scoring Harold Ramirez as the Rays took a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Marcus Semien homered as a Ranger at Globe Life Field for the first time. It was a 380-foot homer to left field, cutting the Tampa Bay lead to 3-1. Texas had a golden chance with two on and one out in the seventh inning. However, Sam Huff and Eli White, both pinch hitters, struck out in the inning, preventing damage. The Rangers had another chance with two on in the eighth but a Mitch Garver flyout ended the inning. Texas had baserunners on, but couldn't find that big hit on Thursday. "We keep getting traffic and keep putting ourselves in situations like that, we'll eventually cash it in," Chris Woodward said. "My biggest thing is are we staying in the moment? Are we not making the moment too big and following our game plan?"
The walks hurt Taylor Hearn on Thursday. He walked four Tampa Bay Rays in four innings while allowing six hits and three runs on the day. Taylor struck out three, but the command is what shortened the outing for Hearn. Taylor was under the weather on Thursday, "I try not to let it effect me too much," Hearn said. "I try to do the best I could. I hate that physically I wasn't doing it, but still no excuse." Garrett Richards threw two shutout innings, allowing two baserunners, one in each inning. On Thursday, he struck out one batter and threw thirty-six pitchers in his dual-inning outing. Brock Bukre pitched another scoreless two-inning outing on Thursday. He ran into some danger with two on and none out in the eighth, but worked out of the jam unscored upon. Brett Martin pitched a scoreless ninth inning to end the day for Rangers' pitchers.
Postgame Notes
The home run by Marcus Semien was his third career home run at Globe Life Field. He hit two in the April series in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Brock Burke has a fourteen-inning scoreless streak currently. The last run Burke allowed was April 29th against the Braves.
Thursday was the third outing for Garrett Richards in the past twenty days. Richards has thrown 4.2 innings and allowed three baserunners (two hits and one walk).
Semien's home run was the first homer Corey Kluber gave up at Globe Life Field. He went 15.1 scoreless at Globe Life Field before the homer.
In ten starts against the Rangers, Kluber is 6-1 with a 3.21 ERA. He has allowed twelve home runs against the Rangers despite only twenty-four earned runs allowed.
Entering Thursday, Jonah Heim was 1 for 15 in his career against the Tampa Bay Rays. He had two hits on the afternoon.
The Rangers are in the bottom five in baseball with run production against right-handers. However, the club is in the top five against left-handers.
Texas finishes the series 3 for their last 26 with runners in scoring position in the last three games (.115).
