Game Recap

Tuesday's "get back on track" game didn't go as planned. Chad Kuhl and the Rockies pitching staff quieted the Rangers' bats all night and left a smaller crowd with little to cheer. Texas mustered up three hits, two by Mitch Garver, despite walking five times. The scoring started in the bottom of the second inning on Andy Ibáñez's RBI single. However, the lead lasted only half an inning as the Rockies put pressure on Rangers' starter Martín Pérez. "They pitched better than us," Pérez said after the game. "It was good. It was fun to be back here and do my thing again." Five consecutive Rockies reached base, including a Charlie Blackmon single and a Kris Bryant double to score runs. Then in the fifth, Colorado added another run on an RBI groundout with the bases loaded by CJ Cron. Greg Holland came into relief and limited the damage to that groundout. The Rangers had hope in the fifth when Corey Seager blasted a ball to the Rangers bullpen. However, Randal Grichuk made his Superman impression and robbed Seager of a go-ahead three-run homer. "That play Grichuk made changed the whole game," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said after the game. "Heck of a play. We couldn't get anything offensively."

Holland pitched a nice inning of relief to keep the Rangers in the game, and a clean inning by Kolby Allard (first outing of the year). Spencer Patton came into the seventh inning and walked the leadoff hitter, Connor Joe. Joe later scored on a Kris Bryant sacrifice fly to extend the Rockies' lead to 4-1. Both Josh Sborz and John King came into the eighth and ninth and threw scoreless frames. On a positive note, Rangers relievers pitched five innings of one-run baseball with two walks and striking out five. "Sborz righted the ship in his second outing, and today he was better," Woodward told me after the game. "King only gets in trouble when he gets weak hits. I don't think he gets hard. [King] 's stuff looks good [and] he looks healthy." On Tuesday, the Rockies used three relievers, shutting down the Texas offense and allowing one hit all night. On Wednesday, the Rangers have an off day before welcoming Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and the Angels to Arlington on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 with Dane Dunning on the mound against Ohtani.
