Game Recap
The Rangers wrapped up their 2022 road schedule in Anaheim against the Angels. Tyson Miller got the start, making his second official start as a Texas Ranger. In his last outing on Tuesday against the Mariners, he came in the third inning and threw 3.2 quality innings, allowing three baserunners against Seattle. Meanwhile, Tucker Davidson got the start for the Angels, who faced Texas two weeks ago in Arlington. In that start, Davidson threw five innings, allowed three earned runs and five hits, struck out three, and didn't walk a batter. Texas entered the afternoon trying to avoid getting swept by the Angels and finishing with a 1-5 road trip.
The first inning was disastrous for Miller. Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani, and Taylor Ward each singled, scoring a run (Trout) to put Los Angeles up 1-0. Next, Logan O'Hoppe drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk. Then, Livan Soto picked up another two RBI with a double to left to extend the Angels' lead to 4-0. To cap off the inning, David Fletcher singled home O'Hoppe and Soto for two more runs and finished the inning with a 6-0 Angels lead. The Rangers had a two-out chance with a Luis Rengifo error and a Josh Smith walk, but Bubba Thompson struck out against Davidson to end the threat. The Angels put up another threat in the third with two on and none out. Miller picked up a 4-6-3 double play and a Rengifo groundout to keep the deficit 6-0.
Mike Trout led off the fourth with a solo home run, his first home run against the Rangers in his last five games. In the fifth, the Rangers got to Tucker Davidson as Corey Seager belted a two-run home run to right field to cut the Angels' lead to 7-2. Nathaniel Lowe walked, and Adolis García doubled to put runners at second and third base. Josh Jung followed with a groundout to score Lowe and make it 7-3 Angels. In the seventh, Los Angeles loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Soto lined into a 4-6 double play to keep a run from scoring, but Jo Adell singled to left, scoring Ward. Next, David Fletcher singled to left, but Josh Smith was heads up and threw out Adell before O'Hoppe crossed the plate. Texas had two walks in the eighth, but it followed with two strikeouts by Josh Smith and Bubba Thompson. Texas went quietly in the ninth to end the afternoon. "We have to play hard until the end. We've experienced just about everything at this point but we just need to play hard for four more games and give us a chance to win," Beasley said in the message for the final four games. "We know it's going to be a series where there'll be good crowds so it should be good energy in the stadium. So it should be a good opportunity to go out, play hard, and expect to win."
Tyson Miller's start started rough, but he was able to chew up three more innings. After a six-run first inning, Miller dealt with traffic in the following three innings but limited the damage to one solo home run. Overall, Miller threw four innings and allowed nine hits, seven runs, three walks, and five strikeouts on eighty-eight pitches. "[Tyson] couldn't seem to find it in the first. He kept missing spots and couldn't get the ball where he wanted to," Tony Beasley said. "But I wanted to give him credit, he did eat up some innings for us. To go back out and give us four innings, it helped us save the bullpen today."
John King provided three innings on Sunday and started by retiring six of the first seven he faced. King's third inning was a struggle with four hits and a walk, though yielding to only one run thanks to a double play and an outfield assist. Dennis Santana walked Trout in his inning, but induced a Shohei Ohtani double play and threw a scoreless eighth inning to end the Rangers pitching day.
