Game Recap

The Rangers and Phillies began a brief two-game series on Tuesday. Before the game, Texas made a few roster spots, including adding Mitch Garver and Josh Smith back from the injured list. In addition, the Rangers selected Meibrys Viloria from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned Sam Huff to Triple-A. "You see the numbers start to go down, and you see him get a little less successful, and I worry as a manager just not being able to play him," Chris Woodward said. "It's going to be hard to get that confidence back. All the signs are pointing him to playing less, and he's not playing as well. He needs to play." On the field, the Rangers turned to their ace, Martín Pérez, to face a Phillies team he shut down back in early May. On the other side, the Rangers saw a familiar face, Kyle Gibson. "Martín is a guy that keeps us on our toes on defense," Marcus Semien said. He's working quick, getting ground balls. For me as an infielder when I know when our pitchers working quick and getting us some work out there, it always keeps me in the game. He's been doing great all year. He's one of the best pitchers in the American League and I'm happy for him to see where he came from last year and the roles he was in and now in the starter doing what he does."

Both Gibson and Martín shut the offenses down in the run column Tuesday through four and a half innings. The Phillies had chances with baserunners in five of the six innings against Pérez. However, Martín closed the door and didn't allow a run in the six innings of work he pitched in. Meanwhile, the Rangers' offense couldn't do much against Kyle Gibson. Through four innings, Gibson pitched to one batter over the minimum and allowed two hits (with one baserunner erased on a double play). Texas struck first in the run column on back-to-back jacks by Nathaniel Lowe (to left field) and Jonah Heim (to right field). The homers put Texas up 2-0 after five innings.

The Rangers added another run in the sixth inning. With one out, Marcus Semien doubled, followed by a Corey Seager shift-beating single, putting Texas up 3-0. The bats came back alive in the eighth inning. The Rangers hit two more home runs (both two-run shots) with Marcus Semien going deep to left field and Kole Calhoun going to dead central, putting the Rangers up 7-0. The Rangers smashed four homers on an all-around good night for Texas. "It comes down to plate discipline, getting ahead in counts, and swinging at the pitches that I know I can do damage on," Marcus Semien said. You have to wait [Gibson] out and let him to come to you, and I think we had a good plan. Today we executed on all phases."

Martín Pérez’s Tuesday was a typical 2022 Martín Pérez start. He didn't allow a run, but he did have to deal with traffic on the bases. Pérez allowed three walks and six hits in his six innings of work which inflated his pitch count. Matt Bush and Dennis Santana each pitched a 1-2-3 inning in their frame. "I stay with my plan and nothing changes. No matter what team you're going to face, you have to go out there and perform that night," Martín Pérez said on the success he has against the Phillies and if it provides extra motivation based on the names in the lineup. "I never get extra motivation. Sometimes we make plays and you're going to have it. I just try to stay with the same mentality and same focus. When you try to do too much, it won't work. It's hard to get the results you're looking for."

Since the score inflated after eight innings, Brock Burke entered in the ninth to finish the game. It was the first appearance for Brock since June 13th against Houston. Brock threw a scoreless ninth capping off the victory Tuesday.

Postgame Notes

  • The Rangers hit back-to-back homers for the fourth time this season.

  • The Phillies have scored one regulation run (non-extra inning run) in their last twenty-six innings against Rangers’ pitching).

  • Martín Pérez hasn't allowed a run in thirteen innings pitched against the Phillies this season. He threw seven shutout on May 4th and six shutout on Tuesday. However, Pérez did walk seven hitters in his thirteen innings thrown.

  • The Rangers have won eight straight games against the Phillies, going back to April 1st, 2014. They're 3-0 against Philadelphia in 2022.

  • The six homers and twelve RBI by Nathaniel Lowe is the most since his breakout April campaign last season, where Lowe hit six homers and drove in twenty-two.

  • All nine of Jonah Heim's homers and twenty-six RBI are when he plays catcher. Jonah is 1 for 6 on the season as a DH with a double.

  • Marcus Semien picked up his fourth three-hit game since June 7th. Before that, he had two three-hit games all season.

  • Corey Seager has driven in a run for the third straight game. It's the third time he's done that, but the first since April, when he hit three consecutive home run games on April 28th-30th.
