Game Recap

The Rangers and Orioles concluded a three-game series Wednesday afternoon. Texas came in trying to avoid a sweep and being swept for the second time in back-to-back home series. They turned to their ace, Martín Pérez, who made his first start after the trade deadline. Obviously, the club didn't deal Martín, but it provided a sense of relief knowing that Pérez would stay as a Texas Ranger for at least two more months. Baltimore sent starter Kyle Bradish, a right-hander, to the mound Wednesday, coming off five innings and a two-run performance against the Cincinnati Reds. "[I'm just] trying to prepare my body to stay healthy all year," Martín Pérez said in what he's looking to accomplish in the next few months. "I think when your healthy you can do everything you want to do in the game. That's one thing I always carry."

The Rangers got to Bradish early. After he hit Corey Seager with a pitch and Nathaniel Lowe singled, Adolis García singled to score Corey and give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. However, Baltimore immediately tied the game on a Ryan McKenna solo home run. Texas tried to retake the lead in the second with the bases loaded, but the Rangers couldn't cash in. Both teams had a runner-in-scoring position in the third, Texas had a chance in the fourth with a runner at third and one out, and Baltimore had the bases loaded in the fifth. Even with all those scenarios, no one pushed a run across, and the game went to the sixth, still even at one. Finally, with runners on first and second in the sixth, Jorge Mateo lined a ball to Charlie Culberson, who flipped to second to complete a double play.

Speaking of double plays, the Rangers had two on, and one out in the sixth themselves, and Culberson hit into a double play to end the Rangers' threat. The Orioles took the lead in the seventh on a Robinson Chirinos solo home run to left field. The Rangers countered with a solo shot of their own. Jonah Heim laced one to the right field corner and over the wall to even the game back up at two. Baltimore answered back with two in the eighth. Jorge Mateo nearly got thrown out at second base, but he was ruled safe and replay upheld the decision. Right after the review, Terrin Vavra and Chirinos each drove in a run to put Baltimore up 4-2.

In the ninth, Anthony Santander doubled to the gap in right center scoring Adley Rutschman and extending the Orioles lead to 5-2. A couple of wild pitches resulted in a run also while the Rangers got one run on a Marcus Semien home run, but it wasn't enough as the Orioles swept the Rangers again. "I thought before the game there was some good energy in the clubhouse and I know we lost the last two games, but day game I thought [giving] some guys off yesterday that they'd be more refreshed," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "We didn't do much in the beginning. We had a couple of opportunities early and didn't cash in."

Martín Pérez had traffic on the bases Wednesday but ultimately held the Orioles to one run in six innings. Pérez allowed five hits, three walks, struck out nine, and the McKenna home run in the six innings. Matt Moore entered and faced three batters. Unfortunately, he allowed a solo home run and walked a batter while only recording one out. Matt Moore is a guy that typically goes more than three batters despite the struggles. "He seemed a little off today. He's been so good for us, been one of our best pitchers, [and] our high leverage guy," Woodward told me. "We were planning to get two out of him. It was his night, he didn't feel right."

José Leclerc finished the seventh inning stranding a runner on. However, in the eighth walked one and allowed two hits with two runs. Jonathan Hernández pitched the ninth. He allowed a walk, a RBI double, and two wild pitches where two runs came home.

Postgame Notes

  • Rangers finish the season series 0-6 vs. Baltimore. It's the first time in Texas/Washington franchise history the club went winless against an American League Opponent.

  • The first inning run scored by the Rangers was the first lead Texas had against the Orioles since the ninth inning on July 5th. They went twenty-nine straight innings without a lead against Baltimore.

  • Nathaniel Lowe extended his hitting streak to ten games with his first-inning single.

  • Martín Pérez's nine strikeouts ties a career-high for Martín

  • Teams combined 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and left on fourteen baserunners.

  • Martín Pérez has gone 19th straight start without a loss, ties Cole Hamels for the Rangers franchise record. Hamels had 19 consecutive starts (August 7th, 2015, to May 27th, 2016). The last Pérez decision that was a loss was April 17th.

  • Robinson Chirinos hit his career home run against the Rangers Wednesday. The other came on May 10th, 2019, at Minute Maid Park when Chirinos was with the Astros.

  • The Chirinos home run was the second home run allowed by Matt Moore in 2022. The other came on July 26th in Seattle when Cal Raleigh homered off Moore.
