Game Recap
The Rangers concluded their four-game weekend set against the Red Sox on Sunday. The club turned to Dane Dunning to stop the seven-game losing streak while Boston announced that their starter, Josh Winckowski called up on Sunday. Concerning roster moves, the Rangers announced that John King got the call from Triple-A Round Rock while the team designated Dallas Keuchel for assignment. It was Dunning’s second career start at Fenway, where he allowed five runs in 4.2 last August. Dane’s previous start against Boston in May also equated to five earned runs to the Boston offense.
Adolis García got the Rangers on the board early with a ground-rule double to right field. It scored Marcus Semien, and then later, Jonah Heim drove in Nathaniel Lowe with an RBI ground out, putting Texas up 2-0 early. However, the Red Sox exploded for four in their first inning. Xander Bogaerts also hit a ground-rule double, scoring Tommy Pham. Later, Trevor Story unloaded to the green monster for a three-run home run putting Boston up 4-2 after an inning. In the second, Bogaerts drove in another run with an RBI single to right field, scoring Connor Wong and extending the Sox lead to 5-2.
Both teams had baserunners in every half inning between the third and top of the sixth. However, both starters settled in with the bullpen taking over. The Red Sox hit into three double plays in four innings while the Rangers had two on the fourth but couldn’t convert their chance. Boston also had runners at second and third and one out in the eighth, but Pham and Alex Verdugo struck out to keep the game somewhat close going into the final frame. However, the Rangers went down quietly in the ninth and feel to their eighth straight defeat. "We got to keep playing the game," Tony Beasley said when asked what message he'd give to the guys on the flight to Houston. "It's a tough stretch. We are having a tough time to find a way to win a ballgame. We've got to win ONE game and find a way to play the next game better."
Dane Dunning was battling his pitches all afternoon. In eighty-nine pitches, Dunning went four innings, allowed five runs, eight hits, walked three, and struck out two. Dane also hit Pham with a pitch as the Rangers continued giving free baserunners to Red Sox hitters all weekend. "Dane scuffled today," Beasley said. "He had a tough time with the strike zone. [Dane] left a lot of pitches that got too much of the plate. [It] was a pretty tough first inning, he left some balls over the plate and they didn't miss any of them."
John King did good work out of the bullpen. King threw three innings and allowed three hits while striking out one. On Sunday, he induced two double plays which kept his pitch count at the thirty-one mark on the day. Jonathan Hernández had some trouble in the eighth, but was able to wiggle out of the jam. It was a decent outing after Thursday's collapse as the Rangers pitchers allowed one run after the first inning and held Boston scoreless for the final six.
