Game Recap

Texas and Minnesota played game two of a four-game series on Saturday. Due to the Twins Hall of Fame ceremony, the game was delayed for thirty-five minutes. The Rangers sent Glenn Otto, the road warrior, to the mound against long-time Tampa Bay Rays pitcher and Pirates pitcher Chris Archer. On Monday, Otto walked six against Oakland but only gave up two hits and one run while limiting the damage. It was another nail-biter between the Twins and Rangers Saturday. "Timely hitting in the tenth was huge to get two runs there," Tony Beasley said.

The Rangers started with a near-home run by Marcus Semien. However, the ball hit the wall wedged and popped out for a double. Though he couldn’t score until with two outs, Adolis García doubled to right field over the head of Max Kepler. It put Texas up 1-0 after the first inning. Minnesota had a baserunner in each inning for the first three innings but didn’t move past first base. Texas had two on in the fourth, but Leody Taveras struck out, and Ezequiel Duran grounded out. In the fifth, the Twins tied the game on Luis Arráez’s RBI single to left field. Byron Buxton almost gave Minnesota the lead, but Bubba Thompson ran down a sinking line drive to preserve the tie.

Texas retook the lead in the sixth inning. With Nathaniel Lowe on, Adolis popped a ball near first base, but Jorge Polanco couldn’t see the ball, and it fell on the ground. Adolis replaced Lowe on the bases and later scored on Ezequiel Duran’s RBI single, putting the Rangers up 2-1. Minnesota had the tying run at third base in the seventh. However, Brock Burke struck out Carlos Correa leaving Gilberto Celestino (who ran for Gio Urshela) at third. In the eighth, Minnesota tied the game. With a two-out walk to Max Kepler, José Miranda laced a single to right center. An aggressive sending of Kepler and a dropped relay scored and evened the game up at 2.

In extra innings, Corey Seager grounded a single past the shift to right scoring Marcus Semien. Mark Mathias scored Seager on a liner to center field, putting the Rangers up 4-2. In the bottom of the inning, Minnesota had two on with two outs and Max Kepler reached on an error by Jonathan Hernández scoring Arráez and cutting the lead to 4-3. Jonathan got Miranda to fly out to Bubba Thompson to end the game. "[Nathaniel Lowe] constantly gives you good at-bats. He fights off tough pitches, he makes the pitcher work, and eventually gets something that he can handle and gets the ball moving forward," Beasley said about Lowe who went 4 for 5 Saturday.

Glenn Otto didn’t deal with much traffic for the first four innings. In the fifth, an error by Corey Seager victimized Otto, which induced the tying run. While it was a lower pitch count at eighty-six, Otto didn’t finish the sixth inning. Overall, Glenn Otto pitched 5.2 innings, three hits, one run, none earned, three walks, and one strikeout. It was the second straight start Otto struck out one.

Brett Martin threw two pitches to complete the sixth inning and keep the Rangers on top. Brock Burke pitched back-to-back days for the first time this season. Burke allowed a hit and struck out two leaving him fired up after he struck out Carlos Correa. It was a struggle for Matt Moore. He threw thirty pitches in his inning allowing a walk, a run, and a single all with two outs. Jonathan Hernández did something he hadn't done in the two months since coming back, throw multiple innings. "The cool thing is, I got the job done," Jonathan said. "That's all that matters, we got the win and let's look for the win tomorrow too." Hernández got a double play in the ninth and struck out one in the tenth, but the key was keeping the lead in the final inning. "They told me if I can get another inning out of me [and] I was like whatever the team needs me to do."
