Game Recap

After a quick turnaround from Miami (the team arrived in Dallas around 1:30 am Tuesday morning), the Rangers welcomed the Oakland Athletics for two games. There was a little lineup shuffling because of the travel and the doubleheader. However, one constant was Marcus Semien at second base. I asked Tony Beasley about Semien's durability before the game. "It takes pride in playing every day, period. He does not want to talk about a day off, period. He told me if he gets a day off, it's because he's benched. [Marcus] comes early, he prepares his body, and he's regimented, [and] has his routine to get himself ready to play every day. He wants to play every single day, and I respect that. Posting up consistently for a 162-game season is not an easy task, but that's how he's wired." For the Rangers, Cole Ragans got the start against the A's rookie, Ken Waldichuk, making his fourth MLB start.

Oakland quickly took the lead in the first with two outs. Dermis García hit a three-run shot to left field going 430 feet to put the Athletics up early, 3-0. The Rangers quickly answer with a couple of runs in the first on three doubles. Marcus Semien led off with a two-bagger, followed by Adolis García, who scored Semien. Josh Jung, batting fifth, drove in Adolis with an almost-homer double that barely missed over the left-center wall. It cut the Athletics' lead to 3-2. The Rangers got a leadoff double in the second by Sam Huff but couldn't bring him home. Oakland extended their lead on a Nick Allen double-scoring Jonah Bride followed by a two-run single by Cristian Pache to pad the A's lead to 6-2.

Oakland added another run on another extra-base hit by Dermis García, ending Cole Ragans' night. The Rangers inched closer in their fifth with back-to-back doubles by Semien and Mark Mathias, along with Adolis García's homer to left. It cut the Oakland lead to 7-5 after five innings. In the seventh, the Rangers tied the game on Mark Mathias' two-run home run to right field. "I'm looking to play, that's my main goal, doesn't matter where I'm at as long as I got the bat in my hands," Mark Mathias said. In the ninth, Mark Mathias said goodnight and walked off the night with another home run, this time to left field to close the night, 8-7. "[I] just tried to be in the moment. You always think about it. You get a shutout in the top of the ninth and walk down the steps and it's like, I can end the game with one swing," Mark Mathias said.

Cole Ragans got rocked early and late on Tuesday. After a three-run outburst in the first, he settled down in the next two innings. However, he got struck again in the fourth and fifth. Overall, Ragans allowed seven runs, eight hits, and one walk and struck out five in his four-plus innings. Taylor Hearn was dominant out of the bullpen Tuesday. Hearn allowed two hits and faced eleven batters while striking out three. Brock Burke retired all six batters he faced while striking out three changing the narrative of the bullpen from Monday's game two loss. "The bullpen did a nice job to keep things settled. Taylor and Burke did a good job at putting zeroes and gave us a chance to chip away," Beasley said.
