Game Recap
The Rangers and Yankees began a three-day, four-game set on Monday, concluding the 2022 season for Texas. An eerie feeling sunk in for the ballpark with history looming as Aaron Judge entered Monday with sixty-one home runs, tying the American League record with Roger Maris back in 1961. Some say it’s the MLB record for most home runs in a season, but that’s a different day to discuss. For Judge to hit it early against the Rangers Monday, he would have to do it against the Rangers ace, Martín Pérez. Meanwhile, the atmosphere was eccentric Monday, filled with fans wanting to see history. I asked Beasley about the younger players pitching to the crowd and the test for him. “It’s always good when players have a chance to be in an environment that they’ve been in for the first time. We’ll just have to wait and see [and] hopefully they’ll embrace it,” Beasley responded.
Things started pretty slow on the offensive side. In Aaron Judge’s first at-bat, he grounded to Josh Jung, who played closer to the shortstop position than the third base side. In Judge’s second at-bat, he hit into a 105 MPH lineout to Marcus Semien, who threw to first to complete a 4-3 double play. The Rangers picked up their first baserunners on a walk by Josh Smith in the third against Luis Severino. Then in the fifth, Kyle Higashioka singled to left, scoring Oswald Peraza and putting the Yankees up 1-0. Marwin Gonzalez followed with another double play, making it four double plays in five innings for Martin Perez.
In the sixth inning, Judge reached base on a check-swing dribbler down the third base line. Josh Jung attempted to make an excellent play, but Judge slowly hit it to where Jung had no chance. The Yankees ended up loading the bases in the inning, but Martin got out of the inning by inducing a double play for the fifth straight inning, keeping the game 1-0 for New York. The Rangers turned another double play in the seventh when Aaron Hicks walked, and Higashioka hit into a nicely turned DP started by Corey Seager to Marcus Semien and finally to Nathaniel Lowe. The Yankees homered twice in the eighth. First, it was Marwin Gonzalez doing damage against the Rangers again. Then, Giancarlo Stanton annihilated a baseball to left, putting New York up 3-0. In the middle of the two homers, Judge struck out. "We did a nice job keeping him at bay, he didn't hurt us at all tonight," Tony Beasley said on the execution against Judge. The Rangers broke up the no-hitter with Josh Jung's single to left field, then Jonah Heim singled to right setting up a scoring chance. Kole Calhoun grounded out to score Jung, but Josh Smith barely missed the wall in center field which would have evened the game up. After the Yankees threatened but didn't score, and the Rangers didn't get anything in the ninth.
Despite the traffic, Martin Perez pitched a heck of a game on Monday against one of the better offenses in baseball. He induced five double plays in six innings against the Yankees, allowing five hits and five walks but only one run and two strikeouts. "Sometimes as a pitcher you don't think to strikeout many people, you just want to pitch for contact, especially against the Yankees. They have a lot of power hitters," Martin Perez said on the defense behind him tonight. "You don't want to play around with those guys because as soon as you miss your location, they'll make you pay." Jesús Tinoco threw a scoreless inning, walking one but picking up a double play on ten pitches. Jonathan Hernández allowed two solo home runs in the eighth inning and struck out one batter. Joe Barlow got into trouble in the ninth with a single and a walk, but Barlow got a force-out, a strikeout, and a pop out to clean his slate Monday.
