Game Recap

The Rangers and Mariners concluded their season series Thursday. Texas tried to win their second straight series against Seattle after dropping each of the first four of 2022. Thursday was Jon Gray's fourth start since returning from the injured list, his third on the road. His last time out was more what the Rangers wanted to see with five innings of one-run baseball against the Cleveland Guardians. Seattle brought out Marco Gonzales, his fifth start against the Rangers this season. With two guys who work quickly, it was the bats that blasted away on Thursday for both offenses.

After Gonzales struck out the side in the first, the Mariners picked up two on a Mitch Haniger two-run home run. The Rangers went liftoff in the third. Sam Huff blasted a leadoff home run to center field to cut Seattle's lead to 2-1. After Josh Smith singled, Marcus Semien went yard to left field, putting the Rangers up 3-2. Two batters later, Adolis García went deep to left field, capping off a three-homer inning for the Rangers, something they haven't done in three years. Seattle quickly tied the game up in their half of the third. Haniger launched a ball to left field to even the game up at four. In the fourth, the Mariners retook the lead on a Jarred Kelenic home run to left center. After the homer and two on, Jon Gray induced two groundouts, one a double play, to prevent further damage.

The Rangers had a chance in the sixth with two on and one out. However, Matt Brash struck out Huff and Kevin Plawecki to end the Rangers' chance to tie. Kelenic followed suit of the night, hitting his second home run, putting the Mariners up 7-4 after six. In the seventh, the Rangers hit two more home runs against Paul Sewald. First, it was Semien hitting his second of the night, and then Nathaniel Lowe got into the act with a shot to right field, cutting the Mariners' lead to 7-6. "[Marcus] is having good at-bats one after another," Tony Beasley said in what has made Marcus Semien good in September. "Quality at-bats, he's not missing pitches that are left over the plate and doing damage. He's doing what we thought Marcus Semien would do." In the eighth, the Rangers tied the game with runners on the corners. Plawecki hit into a 6-4-3 double play scoring Bubba Thompson. The Mariners got a runner to second on a walk and a wild pitch in the ninth, but France grounded out to send the game to extra innings.

In the tenth, Kole Calhoun delivered with a base hit to right field scoring García to put Texas up 8-7. With two on and two outs, Plawecki struck out on a pitch below the zone called a strike. In the bottom of the tenth, Calhoun made a fantastic play which ended as a sacrifice fly to even the game. However, Eugenio Suárez stole second on a Rangers appeal that Sam Haggerty left early and Abraham Toro moved to third base (Toro ran for Suárez). Kelenic popped up and the game moved to the eleventh. Leody Taveras ran for Plawecki in the 11th, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Semien. The Mariners tied the game on back-to-back hits as Luis Torrens scored Kelenic to even the game. JP Crawford hit a shot off of Josh Jung's glove that trickled into left field scoring Dylan Moore and closing out a Mariners walk off. "We didn't get the lead off batter out especially in the eleventh, they put three hits together against us. It felt like we battled, they just got more than we did. They came up with big hits [and] clutch hits," Tony Beasley said in evaluating the extra innings.

Jon Gray's night had ups and down to it. Gray threw five innings but allowed six runs, eight hits, three walks, and three home runs. Jon did strike out five on ninety-eight pitches but didn't find much consistency on the evening. "It looked like [Gray] had a tough time hitting his spots and everytime he missed his spot they put good swings on him. Other than that he was throwing the ball really good. He was getting two outs then both of the first two home runs came with two outs," Beasley said."

Brock Burke continued his dominance after the first batter Burke faced was a home run. In the two inning Brock pitched, he struck out four, notching eighty-nine strikeouts in eighty-one innings this season. Matt Moore's evening was quick. He retired the side in order on eight pitches and his Thursday was complete. Jonathan Hernández walked JP Crawford and threw a wild pitch, but didn't yield a run in his one inning of work. José Leclerc ran into small issues in the tenth. He allowed the zombie runner to score, walked a batter, but picked up a big strikeout. Although didn't get the save, avoided the walk off. John King came in and the Mariners found holes against King. John allowed three hits (all line drive singles) and two runs (one earned).
