Game Recap
After the Rangers capped off the weekend in Oakland with an offensive show, they flew into Seattle. The Mariners swept the Rangers last weekend in four games, but Seattle scuffled the past weekend, dropping all three games to the Houston Astros. It was the Glenn Otto vs. Chris Flexen matchup part two, as both were on the hill on the final game before the All-Star break. Otto allowed three runs in six innings against the Mariners nine days ago. It was a trend in the right direction while Chris Flexen looked to get the regular work in after his abbreviated starts on July 26th. "[Flexen] gave us some decent pitches to hit at times," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "Overall he did what Flexen does. He pounds the zone, executes pitches on us, and didn't give us much outside of that Adolis homer."
The Rangers' offense went down quietly on five pitches in the first, leaving a runner in scoring in the second. In the third inning, Texas took the lead on a wild pitch by Flexen, scoring Ezequiel Duran. The Rangers loaded the bases afterward, but Nathaniel Lowe grounded to first base. The Mariners tied the game on a Cal Raleigh RBI single to right field and took the lead on a Glenn Otto wild pitch. Otto escaped more trouble by striking out Dylan Moore to prevent a severe inning.
Seattle extended the lead on a Ty France solo home run to center field. However, Adolis García returned the favor with a home run sneaking over the wall in right field to cut it back to a one-run game. The Mariners added another run in the seventh inning. Carlos Santana hit a grounder to Duran, where there was a slight bobble by Ezequiel. The Rangers turned the out at second, but Santana beat the throw to drive in the run. The Rangers inched closer in the ninth with a Nathaniel Lowe home run, but with two on and none out the Rangers could not pull the tying run through. Texas was 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position on Monday. "I thought early on we had really good at-bats," Woodward said in assessing his bats with runners in scoring position. "We couldn't get enough of the quality of bats in a row and in the ninth I felt like we had a good shot there. We gave ourselves a chance, but couldn't get enough done at the end."
Glenn Otto's evening was about the same as the last start. Again, Otto ran into control issues resulting in a wild pitch, plus he allowed the France home run. In 5.1 innings, Otto allowed three runs, seven hits, five strikeouts, and one walk, which came late. "I thought [Otto] did a decent job," Chris Woodward said. "Overall it was a decent outing and kept us in the game." Brock Burke finished the sixth inning but, in the seventh, loading the bases. Burke allowed a run in the seventh with two strikeouts, a hit, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Dennis Santana finished the seventh inning by striking out Eugenio Suárez. José Leclerc pitched a scoreless eighth by striking out the side, but he did walk a batter in his inning of work to close out the Rangers pitching staff Monday.
