Game Recap
After a hectic trade deadline, for the league and not the Rangers, Texas and Baltimore played the second game of a three-game series. There wasn't good news on Jon Gray before the game. According to the Rangers, the MRI for Gray showed a left oblique strain. Gray hit the injured list for the third time in 2022. According to the team, the timetable is 4-6 weeks, which would put him out until the middle to late September if everything is on schedule. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Spencer Howard took the mound coming off a strong start against the Angels. The Rangers offense faced a former club teammate, for a few, Jordan Lyles. "We had a couple of opportunities offensively. A couple of opportunities against Jordan but couldn't muster much offense," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said.
The Rangers had baserunners in the first two innings against Jordan Lyles. However, Lyles got Nathaniel Lowe to ground out and struck out Ezequiel Duran to end the first with two on. In the second, Josh Smith struck out with a runner on second base. The Orioles' offense went to life in the third inning. Six straight Orioles reached against Spencer Howard. After a hit by a pitch and a walk, Jorge Mateo launched a three-run home run to left field. Then Cedric Mullins singled, Adley Rutschman doubled, and Anthony Santander singled to bring in a run. The inning capped off with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Mountcastle.
Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning. Rutschman and Santander doubled to score a run to extend the Orioles' lead to 6-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Marcus Semien singled home Meibrys Viloria to put the Rangers on the board and avoid the shutout. Texas had a chance with two on and one out. However, Marcus Semien hit into a fielders' choice, and Corey Seager grounded out to clear the Rangers' chance. The Orioles added two more on another Jorge Mateo two-run home run. Mateo picked up his first career multi-home run game along with a career high five runs batted in. Viloria homered in the ninth and the Rangers had two more on after that, but couldn't cash in one more time. The Rangers dropped another lopsided game to the Orioles. "We never could get back in," Woodward said.
Spencer Howard had two great innings to begin Tuesday. However, the third inning blew up on him, and he ultimately left in the fifth inning. Howard threw four-plus innings allowing six hits, six runs, two walks, and three strikeouts on eighty-one pitches. "I thought Spencer looked great for the first two innings. You could tell the [home run] shook Spencer up a little bit," Chris Woodward said. [We] couldn't get anything really after that."
Josh Sborz threw two quality innings, allowing one baserunner in the two innings. Sborz threw eighteen strikes on twenty-three pitches, a quality bullpen outing the Rangers needed. Taylor Hearn threw two quality innings walking one one batter and not allowing a hit. Hearn struggled a tiny bit with command but ultimately faced one over the minimum in his two innings. Dennis Santana's struggled continued allowing a two-run home run in his outing. Santana walked one and allowed two hits.
