Game Recap
The Rangers offense combined for five runs against the Yankees pitching staff on Sunday and Monday. It was a frustrating two-day, three-game span for Texas in a hitters' paradise park. "For us to give up five runs at Yankee Stadium against a team that is a juggernaut prior to that, that's more frustrating than encouraging because I had higher expectations for this team," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said before the game about dropping two of three against the Yankees. Then the Rangers came home to face a struggling Kansas City Royals team that dropped seven of their last nine games.
Texas wasted no time in the offense, thanks to Corey Seager. Seager squeaked a homer to left field in the first tinning, putting the Rangers up 1-0. Kole Calhoun came up clutch with an opposite-field single, scoring both Adolis García and Jonah Heim. Corey Seager went deep in his next at-bat against Royals' starter Brad Keller with a no-doubt home run to right field, putting Texas up 4-0. In the fourth inning, the Rangers continued their aggressiveness with a Nick Solak stolen base, scoring on a Brad Miller single. The Rangers' five runs through four innings matched their run total in the last three games in New York. "It was a good offensive night all around," Corey Seager said after the game. "We had chances in New York and we never felt like we had that big hit. To get out there and get on the board and get some big hits, it jumpstarted us."
The Rangers added another run after Nick Solak, and Eli White executed a double steal followed by a wild pitch by Royals reliever Amir Garrett. Pérez ran into trouble in the seventh. Two errors by Charlie Culberson, but two runners on and none out, and Michael A Taylor drove in a run with a single. The single-ended Martín's night. John King came in where Whit Merrifield singled to drive in a run, and Nicky Lopez drove in a run on a groundout. King got out of trouble to keep the lead, but the Rangers' advantage shrunk to 6-4. Joe Barlow came into the ninth and threw a scoreless frame with some help from Kole Calhoun, robbing Merrifield of extra bases. "It was cool to see him fist bump," Chris Woodward said about Kole Calhoun and that ninth inning dive. "If that ball gets by him, it's a triple. I love the guy, he's a passionate player and we need more of that."
Martín Pérez's night was about as good as the previous three starts. Pérez started the night by striking out the side in the first inning and faced the minimum through four innings (a single erased on a double play). Martín ran into a tiny blip in the fifth with a leadoff double by Hunter Dozier, which scored on MJ Melendez's infield single (bang-bang play at first base). Pérez went 6.1 innings, five hits, three runs, one earned run, no walks, and five strikeouts. "From last year to this year, I'm not giving too much credit to the hitters," Martín said. "I'm going out there and throw my pitches where I want it." In King’s 1.2 innings, he allowed two hits (one came where he entered in the seventh) and walked another batter, but got out of a two on jam in the eighth and limited the damage in the seventh.
Postgame Notes
Rangers have won seven straight games at home against the Royals
In 939 career innings at third base, Charlie Culberson committed eleven errors. In the seventh inning Tuesday, Charlie committed an error on back-to-back plays.
Corey Seager has posted the 11th multi-homer game of his career in the regular season. He's the first Ranger in 2022 to have a multi-home run, and it's Seager's second multi-homer game at Globe Life Field (he had one in the 2020 postseason with the Dodgers).
Martín Pérez's 106 pitches Tuesday is the most by a Rangers starter in 2022. It's also the most for Pérez since July 25, 2018, against the Oakland Athletics, when Martín was with the Rangers.
Whit Merrifield's single in the seventh was his third hit with a runner in scoring position in nineteen at-bats.
Jonah Heim is 4 for 11 on the season when batting cleanup with the two hits Tuesday.
The Rangers have stolen seven bases in their last three home games.
