Game Recap

Friday was the last time the Rangers would sport their red Friday jerseys this season. The Cleveland Guardians came to town riding a four-game winning and coming off a sweep of the AL Central second place team, the Chicago White Sox. Meantime, the Rangers won a series this week for the first time in September and won the last two against the Angels. Jon Gray took the mound, and while he was still on a pitch limitation, it grew to a target of about eighty pitches, according to Tony Beasley. "When Jon is pitching well, he can do a lot with ninety pitches," he said. "With the oblique injury, you may be tentative to let it go, with the fear of pulling it or reinjuring that. [Gray] has not held back [and] he's been all out."

The Rangers took the lead in the second inning. Newcomer Kevin Plawecki singled up the middle, the first hit by both sides in the game. The single scored Adolis García and allowed Leody Taveras to score thanks to an error by Myles Straw. Texas took a 2-0 lead after two innings. Josh Naylor stole second base in the fourth with runners on the corners. However, an errant throw by Plawecki allowed Amed Rosario to score to cut the Rangers' lead to one run. The Guardians put together six hits in the sixth inning. Naylor doubled home Steven Kwan to even the game up. Next, Oscar González singled home José Ramírez to give Cleveland the lead. Andrés Giménez drove in Naylor with a single to right field to cap off the five-run inning, and Will Brennan hit a two-run single up the middle, scoring González and Giménez, putting the Guardians up 6-2.

The Rangers countered with a run in their half of the sixth. Josh Jung walked and stole second base. Josh Smith drove in Jung with a single to right field, cutting the Cleveland lead to 6-3. In the eighth, the Rangers got a leadoff double by Adolis and Josh Smith walked. Unfortunately, Texas couldn't do anything with two-on as Jonah Heim flew out to end the frame. In the ninth, the Rangers picked up two hits off Emmanuel Clase and Adolis was hit by a 100 MPH cutter, loading the bases. Josh Jung grounded out in a force out at second which ended the night. "I love the fight, the team continued to fight until the last inning," Tony Beasley said on the last two innings where the team got runners on. "We brought the go-ahead run to the plate [in the ninth]. We kept fighting, that's one thing I've been really happy with with our ball club. There's been no quit in them."

Jon Gray extended his pitch count from sixty-seven his last time out vs. the Rays to around ninety on Friday. He hit eighty-seven after five innings and faced three over the minimum. Gray allowed one run on one hit, one walk, one hit-by-pitch, and one strikeout. "The results were good," "Kevin was great behind the plate today and it was a good game plan going in , I just felt like I was wild [and] out of control, early on and even towards the end. It seems like the time came to make a good pitch, we did it."

Meanwhile, the Guardians knocked Taylor Hearn around for six hits and five runs in the sixth while only recording one out Friday. Cleveland strung five straight hits to depart Hearn on only twenty-one pitches. Jesús Tinoco recorded the final two outs in the sixth to keep the crooked number from enlarging. Then came out in the seventh and retired the side in order with one strikeout in the mix. Tinoco threw twenty-one pitches, too, in his 1.2 innings. Joe Barlow came back for the first time since August 17th and the second time since July 12th. Barlow threw twelve pitches and retired the side in order with one strikeout. Dennis Santana hit a batter to lead off the inning and Brennan stole second. However, Santana did get out of the jam with nothing coming across, ending the Rangers pitching evening.

Postgame Notes

  • Adolis García stole his twenty-fifth base Friday, putting him in the 25 / 25 club. Adolis is the 6th player and 7th all-time a Rangers player to have a 25 / 25 season. The last Ranger to have a 25 / 25 season was in 2011 (Ian Kinsler).

  • Jon Gray struck out one batter Friday. It's the sixteenth time he struck out one or fewer batters in his career. The last time came on June 4th, 2021, when Gray went 2.1 innings and didn't strike out an Oakland Athletics batter.

  • The Rangers entered Friday allowing 53 runs in the sixth inning, tied for the fewest in MLB (Dodgers). They allowed five in the sixth.

  • The five runs allowed by Taylor Hearn are the most he's allowed when in the bullpen. Previously, Hearn had not allowed more than three runs in a relief outing.

  • Rangers finish the Friday home schedule going 2-10 at home on Fridays. Since Globe Life Field opened, the Rangers are 11-20 at home on Fridays.

  • With a stolen base Friday, Bubba Thompson is 66 of 72 between the minors and majors stealing bases (91.7%).

  • Josh Jung picked up his first MLB walk in the sixth.

  • Cody Morris becomes the eighth pitcher to earn his first MLB win at the expense of the Rangers. Tyler Cyr (OAK), Bryan Hoeing (MIA), Hunter Brown (HOU), Kaleb Ort (BOS), Brayan Bello (BOS), Kirby Snead (OAK), and Penn Murfee (SEA) are the other pitchers.
