Game Recap
The Rangers and Athletics concluded a four-game series on Thursday after a tough week around the Arlington area. Texas sent Dane Dunning to the mound coming off what Dane described as a frustrating start Saturday. Despite that, Dane pitched into the fifth inning and only allowed three runs. Oakland threw out Zach Logue, who faced the Rangers for the second time this season. On May 28th, the Rangers hit Logue hard for four runs and seven hits in 2.1 innings. Before the game, I talked to Mark Mathias, who made his Rangers debut on Wednesday and doubled in the ninth. "It was cool for [my family] to see it because in 2020, I played half the year in the big leagues, and they weren't able to see it in person because of COVID," Mark said. "Yesterday was the first big league hit that my parents and family saw in person, so it was pretty special."
The Rangers started by taking the lead, which manager Tony Beasley hoped would happen today. Jonah Heim laced a triple to left field that hugged the wall giving Tony Kemp fits. It scored Adolis García from first base and put Texas up 1-0. There was a pitch that Logue threw and skipped past Shea Langeliers, but an impressive throw tagged Heim at the plate. Next, mark Mathias came up and drove a solo home run to left to give Texas a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Oakland tied the game up on a Sheldon Neuse two-run home run to left off Dane Dunning. The Rangers immediately answered with a Heim single to center field, scoring Nathaniel Lowe and Leody Taveras lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Adolis. "I was pleased with the effort. My favorite play of the whole day was Seager's hit and Semien going first to third aggressively and Seager followed suit going to second," Tony Beasley said. "We ended up with second and third scenario there, our two main players set the tone for us when it comes to hustle and effort. We fed off of that."
Texas broke the game open in the fifth with Nathaniel Lowe blasting a ball to right center field with Marcus Semien and Corey Seager scoring. The homer extended the Rangers' lead to 7-2. In the sixth, the Rangers loaded the bases as Mathias scored on a wild pitch by Oakland reliever Domingo Tapia. The A's intentionally walked Lowe to load up the bases for Adolis. However, García grounded out to second base. The Rangers added two more in the eighth with three straight baserunners. Marcus Semien singled home Ezequiel Duran while Corey Seager scored Bubba Thompson on a sacrifice fly, putting the Rangers up 10-3. Texas earned a split and took the season series against Oakland with their Thursday win (10-7). "Everybody came in today [with] a clear head [and] good attitude," Dane Dunning said on the vide today. "We came out swinging from the start and able to put together a good group of innings. Everybody felt a little more energy out here."
Dane Dunning allowed a two-run homer in the fourth; that was the only damage. Three of Dane's five hits allowed came in the fourth. Dunning started strong but walked a batter in three of his last four innings on Thursday. Overall, it was a quality outing for Dane Dunning and put the Rangers in another position to win. "It was a lot better feeling [and] outcome, [but] not as satisfied with my performance based off of walks and couple of hard hit balls," Dane Dunning said. "The results in the past couple of games have been better then what it has been, [but] it's definitely pitching wise, a couple of missed locations and mistake pitches that they were able to capitalize on. Try to be more persistent with location and pounding the strike zone."
Brett Martin allowed a lead-off double that scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. Matt Moore came back from paternity/bereavement list today (John King sent down to Triple-A). Moore walked a batter, but threw a scoreless eighth inning. José Leclerc finished the afternoon with a scoreless ninth inning.
