Game Recap
The Rangers hit the road for the final time in 2022 for a six-game road trip—first, Seattle, where the Rangers took on the playoff-hopeful Seattle Mariners. Originally, Tuesday was Dane Dunning’s spot in the rotation. However, with hip surgery, the club officially placed Dunning on the injured list and recalled Tyson Miller. Jesús Tinoco deemed the opener for Tuesday, with Miller pitching most of the work on the day. Texas’ offense squared off against the Mariners’ ace, Robbie Ray. “If we can disrupt things, especially for teams in our division that we have to play a lot and compete with to get into the postseason, it’s a little more [motivation],” Tony Beasley said on Sunday, about spoiling the Mariners playoff chances. “We have to roll in there and be better.”
It was the rookie Josh Jung that got things started for the Rangers. He blasted a home run over the T-Mobile Park out-of-town scoreboard in the second inning, putting the Rangers up 1-0. Sam Huff followed with a walk but ended up stranded at first base. In the fourth, the Mariners started the frame with back-to-back singles by Ty France and Mitch Haniger, but two strikeouts and a line-out ended the Seattle threat. Finally, in the pivotal sixth inning, the Rangers picked up a run on a Josh Jung single, scoring Marcus Semien. Texas ended up loading the bases against Robbie Ray and later Penn Murfee, but Leody Taveras grounded out to end a further threat. However, the Rangers made the Mariners throw thirty-eight pitches in the top of the sixth. "Just had a good plan against Ray tonight and went out and executed pretty well," Josh Jung said. "Put some good swings on some balls and we'll take that every day."
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Mariners put two on as Dennis Santana faced Cal Raleigh. Raleigh squibbed a ball right to Jung at third base for the unassisted putout to end the inning. In the eighth, the Rangers added three more thanks to another Jung blast. The one in the eighth was the first of his five with men on base and extended the Rangers lead to 5-0. In the ninth, José Leclerc walked two, but with the theme for the Seattle offense, they couldn't do anything with the two walks, capping the shutout. "We had a specific game plan going into this game and Josh did a good job executing the game plan we had off Ray," Tony Beasley said. "It's good to see [Jung] have a night like this for his confidence and for the team as well. Gave us a boost tonight and was much needed."
Jesús Tinoco struggled with command in the first inning but settled down and picked up two strikeouts in the first inning. He retired the Mariners in order in the second to end his successful evening. Then, Tyson Miller entered in the third and did fantastic work on the night. Miller struck out three, walked one, and allowed two hits in 3.2 innings. In Miller’s other relief outing as a Texas Ranger, he allowed one hit, two walks, and an unearned run in 2.1 innings. "[Miller] was outstanding, better than I anticipated on being tonight," Beasley said. "Tinoco did a good job to give us those two scoreless innings. That's what we wanted him to do tonight to get us to the third unscathed."
Dennis Santana entered the sixth walking one but inducing a groundout to keep the game 2-0 at the time. Matt Moore allowed two hits, but induced a double play, finalizing a scoreless seventh inning. Jonathan Hernández allowed a single, but retired the Mariners without allowing a run in his inning of work. José Leclerc finished out the ninth with a scoreless ninth, though walked to complete the Rangers shutout Tuesday.
