Game Recap
The Rangers began a three-game set against the Washington Nationals in Arlington. It’s the first time the Nationals came to Arlington since 2005 (obviously played at the old stadium). Texas turned to Dane Dunning, coming off an okay start at Detroit, where he struggled with command. He opposed a former Ranger, Paolo Espino. Espino pitched in six games in 2017 for Texas when the Rangers purchased him from the Milwaukee Brewers. For Dane, it was his first start against the team that drafted him in 2016 (29th overall pick in the draft by the Nationals). Dunning pitched nicely, but the offense couldn't get much going Friday. "I don't have any grudges against them because they gave me the opportunity to draft me," Dane Dunning told me when I asked if there was a little more extra entering the start. "It was nice to have a good outing against them."
Both the Rangers and Nationals offenses had baserunners on throughout the first half of the ballgame (ten hits through four innings), but neither team could push a run across early. In the top of the fourth inning, the Nationals ran the bases aggressively by sending Nelson Cruz on a single to center field. Adolis García threw a strike to the plate, and Cruz was out easily. García also made an excellent play in center field in the first inning to run down a fly ball. "Adolis is awesome all the time," Dane said. "It's great to have him behind me. It was a huge help keeping the momentum with us." In the top of the sixth, the Nationals struck first with two doubles in the inning. Then, Luis García hit a shot that bounced into the Rangers bullpen for a ground-rule double, putting Washington up 1-0.
The Rangers’ García answered quickly with a shot to left field, tying the game up at one. Then, in the eighth, the Nationals retook the lead. After Juan Soto doubled, Josh Bell picked up his third hit of the night. It scored Soto and put Washington up 2-1. The Rangers struggled by going 0 for 11with runners in scoring position on Friday and fell in the first game to the Nationals. They had runners on the corners and one out and could not convert. "I don't necessarily think we gave ourselves a great chance, but they had a ton of opportunities as well," Marcus Semien said. "2-1 ballgame, I'm not surprised we lost the way we hit."
Dane Dunning started strong on Friday. Despite having baserunners in all but the fifth inning, Dunning avoided any significant damage. In Dane’s six innings, he allowed one run, seven hits, one walk, hit a batter and struck out four Nationals. "I kept them off balance," Dane Dunning said. "They had a good approach from the start. They tried to get under my sinker, but we adjusted to their game plan a little bit. had two mistake pitches in the sixth and that was it."
Matt Bush pitched a scoreless seventh inning retiring the side in order and striking out two hitters. Dennis Santana struggled in his eighth-inning outing, allowing two hits and one run. Santana recorded only one out, and Brett Martin cleaned up, finishing the eighth and retiring both hitters he faced. Martin came back in the ninth and retired the Nationals in order saving the Rangers bullpen for a bullpen game on Saturday.
