Game Recap

Friday began the final road series of the season for the Rangers as they took on the Angels in Anaheim. Otto made his third start of the season against the Angels, all in Anaheim, while the Angels brought out Reid Detmers. Detemers faced the Rangers for the fifth time in 2022. In Otto’s last outing against the Guardians was a quality 5.2 innings allowing one run and three hits. For Reid Detmers, he went four innings against Minnesota and allowed four runs and eight hits. The Angels entered Friday winning nine of their last thirteen, where two of the four losses came at the hands of the Rangers.

The Angels had a quick opportunity in the first with two two-out hits by Shohei Ohtani and Taylor Ward. However, Otto got Matt Thaiss to ground out to end the first-inning threat by Los Angeles. In the next inning, the Angels struck first with a Jo Adell home run to center field, and in the third inning, Luis Rengifo went deep to right field to put the Angels up 2-0. Texas got on the board in the fourth as Adolis García doubled to the right field gap scoring Corey Seager to cut the deficit to one run after four innings. The Rangers picked up a leadoff double by Sam Huff to start the fifth, but Huff couldn’t score with two strikeouts and a lineout. The Angels added another run on a Taylor Ward double, scoring Mike Trout. Ward’s double came on a 3-0 fastball with first base open and two outs.

The Rangers didn't have a baserunner go past first base for the final four innings. García singled with two outs in the sixth. Josh Smith reached on a pinch-hit leadoff single in the seventh, but Texas struck out three straight times. In the eighth, the Angels had three straight baserunners. A double, a single, and an error by Taylor Hearn scored Matt Duffy and extended the Halos lead to 4-1. With two on and none out, a strikeout, a fielders' choice, and a fantastic play by Semien ended further threats for the Angels. In the ninth, the Rangers struck out twice against Jimmy Herget equating to sixteen strikeouts on the night and falling to the Angels Friday. "We did a good job. You got to give credit when its due," Beasley said on the offense struggles Friday. "Detmers did a nice job tonight executing pitches on both sides of the plate [and] changing speeds. We did a good job attacking him tonight. He executed his pitches, kept the ball down, came up and in, and used both sides of the plate. [Reid] pitched a good ballgame tonight."

Glenn Otto finished September with another solid outing. Otto threw six innings, allowing eight hits, three runs, three home runs, seven strikeouts, and one walk. The one walk continues to be a good trend for Otto, but another fascinating aspect was the seven strikeouts; all were sliders. "[Otto] battled for us tonight and gave us six solid innings," Tony Beasley said. "He gave up the two solo home runs where he missed spots and paid for those. The one I really didn't like was giving in to the 3-0 count to Ward with first base open." Taylor Hearn threw a nice seventh inning. In the eighth, he ran into issues with two hits and had trouble fielding a safety squeeze by the Angels. Overall, Hearn allowed three hits, one run, and one strikeout in his two innings of work Friday to close out the Rangers pitching line.
