Game Recap

The Rangers and Yankees concluded their three-game series Monday. A day initially scheduled as an off day for both teams, but with Friday’s makeup game one of the doubleheader, Monday was the makeup of Saturday’s rainout. The offense for both sides was nonexistent halfway through Monday. The first hit came in the bottom of the fourth when Josh Donaldson singled to left field. However, there were four baserunners in the first three innings of Monday’s game (three Yankees walks and one Rangers walk). The Rangers offense had no answer against Yankees’ starter Nestor Cortes Jr. Cortes walked four Rangers in 7.1 innings but left as soon as his no-hit bid ended. Eli White blooped a single in center field in the eighth inning, grabbing the afternoon’s first hit of the Rangers.

Jon Gray’s command came in and out on Monday. He threw twenty-four pitches in the first inning and twenty in the second. In those two innings, he walked three Yankees but worked out of any danger. After retiring seven of the next nine, Jon Gray left in the fifth with the trainers. According to the Rangers, he left due to left knee soreness, but precautionary. Jon allowed two hits and struck out four Yankees. Next, Brock Burke came in and allowed a single and a walk. "He was around the pitch count," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "We were pushing him at that point anyways. It's an easy decision to get him out of there." "His stuff was good. When he's dialed in, they made [the Yankees hitters] look silly. He had trouble with the command in the first inning, but when he did dial in he looked comfortable."

The Yankees had the bases loaded, but Burke barred down and struck out Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo to keep the game scoreless through five innings. Burke then followed with two scoreless innings striking out three. “I’m excited. You always dream of pitching at Yankee Stadium,” Brock Burke told me on Sunday. “I’m excited to do that, and I’m sure it can’t be much different once you get out there.”

On Monday, the Yankees’ hard of the lineup bit Brett Martin in the eighth inning. Aaron Judge singled to left field, and Anthony Rizzo doubled to grab the first run of the ballgame. The Rangers couldn’t muster up anything against the Yankees closer, Aroldis Chapman (other than a Jonah Heim single). As a result, Texas dropped the finale of the rubber match.

Postgame Notes

  • Monday was the first scoreless outing by Jon Gray since June 25, 2021. It breaks a string of nineteen straight outings for Gray where the opposition scored a run against him.

  • There have been twenty-six inherited runners in 2022 for the Rangers’ bullpen and only three all season scored.

  • Teams combined a 2 for 28 with runners in scoring position in the series (Texas 1 for 13, New York 1 for 15).

  • Brock Burke posted three separate five strikeout games in 2022. His first five strikeout outing since his second outing on April 14 against the Angels.
