Game Recap
Thirty minutes after Game One, the Rangers and Yankees were at it again at Yankee Stadium. It was the first doubleheader for Texas since last year in Buffalo against the Blue Jays and one of two in 2022 against the Yankees (the first series of the season moved to the end of the season). Texas turned to Glenn Otto on the mound against the team that drafted him in 2017. The Rangers also saw a couple of familiar faces on the other side for game two (Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Jose Trevino).
It was much the same as game one, with little offensive activity and not much going on the bases. Adolis García and Charlie Culberson racked up singles in their first at-bats. However, Seager replaced García after a force out and was stranded at first, while Culberson got caught stealing in the third inning. Meanwhile, the Yankees offense had the leadoff man on in each of the first three innings with two walks and a single against Glenn Otto. Otto worked out of jams in the first and second but allowed a mammoth shot by Giancarlo Stanton to put New York up 2-0. Eli White cut the lead with a sneaking solo home run to right field in the sixth inning, taking advantage of the short porch.
In the seventh, the Rangers got to the Yankees bullpen. Jonah Heim, doubled-off starter Jordan Montgomery then Michael King, arguably MLB's best reliever, entered into the game. King threw a wild pitch that scored the tying run with runners on the corners, followed by a Brad Miller two-run home run to put Texas up 4-2. The Rangers offense had a few chances in the eighth and ninth but couldn't extend the lead. "We're going to find a way to win this game, even if we did lose the first game the way we did," Chris Woodward said after the game. "There's a lot of belief in the clubhouse right now."
Otto's night ended after five innings. He struggled with command but made pitches when he needed to. Glenn allowed three hits, two runs, three walks, hit a batter and struck out two. Dane talked about how the wind aided his stuff, for Otto it didn't factor. "It was windy out there, but no so much so that I couldn't execute," Otto told me after the game. "I had what I needed, but I needed to do a better job of getting ahead of the hitters and putting them away."
Then, Garrett Richards took over and threw a scoreless sixth inning. Matt Moore struggled in the seventh with a hit and two walks, but Dennis Santana came and cleaned out the inning, getting Aaron Judge to fly out in a critical spot for the second time in the day (he did that in game one). Brett Martin threw an eleven pitch scoreless eighth inning to keep the bullpen's momentum going while Joe Barlow closed the game out in the ninth. “We’re all starting to mesh well and understanding our roles better,” Brock Burke told me earlier in the day about the bullpen's positive turn around. “Everyone is finally getting the better end of the stick and everything.”
Postgame Notes
In 14.1 innings for Glenn Otto, he allowed five runs, eight hits, six walks, and twelve strikeouts,
Brad Miller has two home runs and six runs driven in thirteen at-bats when he enters a game rather than starting.
Yankees' Michael King had a thirteen inning scoreless streak (spanned six outings) before the three-run seventh inning. He also only allowed one home run before the Miller home run since July 2021.
The Rangers extend their success with pinch hitters. Players in their pinch-hit AB have ten hits, two home runs, and eight RBIs. All three lead MLB in their respective categories.
Texas snaps a six-game losing streak at Yankee Stadium. Their last win was Monday, September 2nd, 2019.
Dennis Santana has inherited ten runners in 2022, but none of the ten scored.
Six of the eleven Rangers' wins have been comeback wins.
Rangers snap a seven game losing streak against the Yankees.
