Game Recap
The Mariners and Rangers played game three of a four-game series Saturday. Texas made a few more roster moves, including sending AJ Alexy back to Triple-A Round Rock, activating Jonathan Hernandez off the sixty-day injured list, and DFA’ing Zach Reks. Spencer Howard took the mound for the Rangers, coming off one of his best starts as a Ranger. Howard sent five innings Monday against Oakland, allowing only one earned run. The Rangers offense had the task to go after Logan Gilbert, who pitched the Rangers hard each of the four times Texas has gone up against him. "We didn't make baseball plays today," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "We had a chance ot win the game and we should have won the game in my opinion. We got things we could have done better [and] we didn't play team baseball at the end of the game to win a game. That's what it's going to take for us to get over this hump."
The Mariners loaded the bases in the first inning, but Spencer Howard got JP Crawford to ground out to end an immediate threat. In the bottom of the second inning, Jonah Heim singled up the middle to score Nathaniel Lowe and put Texas up 1-0. However, the shutdown inning didn’t happen. Carlos Santana blasted a home run that traveled to the Rangers bullpen for a two-run home run, putting the Mariner sup 2-1. Both Texas and Seattle had chances following that. With a runner at third and two outs, Adolis García lined to right field, and Ty France struck out with the bases loaded for Seattle.
The Mariners had another opportunity in the sixth inning. After Spencer Howard left the game, Matt Bush preserved the one-game deficit as Seattle couldn’t extend their 2-1 lead. "Bushie is nails. [He] gets the job done and not a better guy for that situation there," Spencer Howard said as when Adolis made the play there was some emotion coming from Howard. "I think I'm flushed today and past everything." Elier Hernández picked up his first MLB RBI in the seventh inning with a single up the middle, scoring Leody Taveras. Both teams couldn't get anything against either bullpen as the game went into extra innings. Seattle scored their zombie runner in the tenth with a JP Crawford single sneaking down the right field line. Texas couldn't convert their zombie runner and ultimately drop another close game in extra innings.
Spencer Howard pitched into the sixth inning. He faced the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings and didn’t yield a run. He did allow a two-run home run, but that was the only damage of the afternoon. Howard walked five, allowed five hits, and struck out three on ninety-one pitches. Matt Bush finished the sixth inning wiggling out of a two-on and none-out situation and keeping the game close. "He's confident out there," Chris Woodward told me. "His ability to execute, even when he got squeezed a little bit, I like what I saw today. His stuff was good, it was crisp, the fastball had a lot of life, the breaking balls were good, [and] threw some decent changeups. It's a real good confident builder for him to build off that."
Jonathan Hernández returned to the big league mound for the first time since 2020 and had Tommy John surgery in 2021. Hernández threw a scoreless seventh inning, allowed one hit, and struck out one batter. "Way different [atmosphere]," Hernández told me as he pitched at Globe Life Field with fans for the first time. "To hear other people, they announced my name, and hearing all the people yelling and saying welcome back, it was amazing." Matt Moore allowed a hit, but threw a scoreless inning on fifteen pitches. Brett Martin came into the ninth inning and didn't allow a run, extending the game to extra innings. In the tenth, he allowed the unearned run to score, but initiated a crucial double play to keep the game at one run. Martin struck out one in his two innings.
