Game Recap

The Rangers and Red Sox concluded their three-game series at Globe Life Field as the Rangers tried to avoid the sweep Sunday. Entering the afternoon, it was a scheduled bullpen game for the Red Sox. Therefore, they sent five-year veteran Austin Davis to the mound to make his first career MLB start. Instead, Texas sent Martín Pérez to the hill against a team he spent the past two seasons with. Martín came off an outing of 106 pitches, allowed four runs, but only yielded one earned run against the Kansas City Royals. "I'm trying to stay with the same focus, "Martín Pérez said after the game. "Don't try to be too perfect and keep doing what I've been doing. You're getting good results so you don't have to change."

In the first four innings, the Red Sox put pressure on Pérez. However, each time Martín didn't break and held Boston scoreless through four with three hits allowed and a walk. In the fifth inning, Rafael Devers doubled in Kiké Hernández to put Boston on top 1-0. The Rangers didn't get a hit in the two innings against Austin Davis and the first two innings against Tanner Houck. In Houck's third inning of work, Kole Calhoun laced a solo home run to the Boston Red Sox bullpen to even the game at one. "I feel like I've been swinging at [the ball] well all season. [I] just don't have anything to show for it," Kole Calhoun said after the game when asked about the success the past week and the homers today. "[I] hit a couple ofballs where they can't play anybody."

The Rangers used their park as a launching pad in the bottom of the sixth inning. After making an exceptional play in straightaway center field, Adolis García blasted a three-run home run to the Rangers bullpen to put Texas up 4-1. "I told Martín to pay attention because we're going to win this game," Adolis said as when he hit the homer, he pointed to Martín Pérez. Immediately after, Kole Calhoun launched his second home run of the day to the exact location (Red Sox bullpen) to extend the Rangers' lead to 5-1. Both offenses didn't do too much until the bottom of the eighth. Adolis García smashed another home run to the Rangers bullpen. It was a two-run variety, extending the Rangers' lead to 7-1.

Martín Pérez's day had a lot of traffic but navigated through a bunch of it. Martín threw ninety-six pitches, allowing one run, five hits, two walks, and struck out seven Red Sox hitters. "The trust factor is off the charts," Rangers manager Chris Woodward said. "We know we have our best pitcher on the mound. He's pitching one of the best in the baseball. I can't say enough about him, he's been spectacular."

John King came in for the seventh inning and retired the Red Sox in order while striking out one. In the eighth inning, Matt Bush ran into traffic after retiring the first two Red Sox hitters. Bush was able to strikeout Cordero with runners on second and third to avoid damage. Joe Barlow allowed a double, but pitched a scoreless ninth to close the door as the Rangers avoided the sweep this weekend.
