Game Recap

Dane Dunning’s first-inning started rough. Although he struck Ohtani, Mike Trout hit a missile out of Globe Life Field that tied the longest home run in the short history of Globe Life (472 feet). The Angels added another on a Brandon Marsh center field single, putting Texas in a 2-0 hole after half an inning. However, the offense clicked in the bottom of the second. After Nathaniel Lowe and Adolis García singled and Willie Calhoun walked, Jonah Heim blasted a Grand Slam home run to right field, putting Texas on top 4-2. Heim delivered again with another RBI in the fourth and almost got picked off second base. However, once replay overturned the call, Corey Seager did his damage with a two-run home run (capping his first Rangers homer) to put the Rangers up five. Nathaniel Lowe followed with an RBI double, and Texas showed the guns up 8-2 after four innings. "I had a good feeling I was safe, but you never know," Jonah Heim told me after the game. "Luckily it came back that I was safe adn we got to stay out there and put more rusn on the board. Happy I made a good slide and Seager hit a homer."

The Rangers’ offense didn’t stop there. Another RBI single by Corey Seager, followed by some spotty defense by the Angels, scored two more runs in the fifth inning. Texas hit four extra-base hits and delivered two separate four-run innings Thursday, something the offense desperately needed after two challenging offensive games against the Rockies. The Angels added a two-run home run in the eighth by Max Stassi to stop ten-straight runs put up by the Rangers from the second inning through the seventh.

Dane Dunning’s first-inning struggles continued with another two runs in the opening inning but settled down. Dane couldn’t finish the fourth but recoiled himself nicely. Dunning’s night finished with 3.2 innings, six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts on eighty-six pitches (thirty-one came in the first). The bullpen followed suit well with scoreless outings by John King and Brock Burke. Garrett Richards ran into some trouble in the eighth but escaped from a possible comeback by the Angels. Brett Martin gave up a run, however, was able to close the night from anymore damage. "I try to go to each outing with the same mentality," Dane told me after the game in the difference between the first inning and second inning. "If it's either a focus thing or preparation work going in, it's definitely going to be figured out and it will be figured out." Dunning said he also didn't feel as good as he did in his start Saturday against the Blue Jays. "I felt more comfortable on the mound in Toronto," Dunning told me. "[The Angels] have a talented lineup and I just calm down and stay within my zone and approach. Started to land a few more of my sliders later on in the game (2nd and 3rd inning), just landing it for strikes, making them honor it more."

Both teams take the field tomorrow at 7:05 pm. The Angels send out Reid Detmers while the Rangers will go with Matt Bush. So remember, fans, get your Charley Pride Bobblehead!

Postgame Notes

  • In the second inning, Jonah Heim’s Grand Slam was the first in his career. It was the first Grand Slam for a Rangers catcher since May 14th, 2016, when Bobby Wilson hit one off Marco Estrada (Blue Jays). Wilson’s slam came in the second inning too.

  • Heim Grand Slam was the first Grand Slam allowed by Shohei Ohtani in his MLB career.

  • Since becoming a Ranger, Dane Dunning allowed twenty-six runs in the first inning (in twenty-seven games). In the second inning, however, Dane allowed two runs total (in twenty-seven games).

  • Corey Seager’s homer was the ninth homer for Seager at Globe Life Field in either the regular season or postseason. That’s tied for third all-time (tied with Nathaniel Lowe)

  • Jonah Heim has eight RBI, two home runs, six runs scored, and zero strikeouts in thirteen plate appearances.

  • Brock Burke has struck out ten of the fifteen batters faced in 2022.

  • Mike Trout's first inning home run tied the longest homer at Globe Life Field with Oakland's Seth Brown (472 feet). Brown's homer was on July 10th, 2021

  • The Rangers had two innings where they batted around. The last time where they did that twice in the same game was May 16th, 2019 against the Royals.
