Game Recap
The Rangers and Angels squared off for a brief two-game series in Anaheim. Texas came off falling three of four to the Houston Astros before sweeping the Angels three games. Texas got another crack at Noah Syndergaard, who didn't get out of the first inning in his last outing against the Rangers. Rangers sent out Dane Dunning coming off a six-inning and two-run outing against the Angels last Wednesday. Tuesday's started with heavy hearts in a moment of silence for what occurred in Uvalde, Texas earlier in the day.
Both starting pitchers held the offenses scoreless through three innings. Noah Syndergaard set down thirteen straight to begin his night, while Dane Dunning allowed one baserunner in the first three innings. The Angels' offense got going in the fourth inning. The inning started with miscommunication between right fielder Kole Calhoun and center fielder Adolis García resulting in a Jared Walsh double. After Matt Duffy singled, Luis Rengifo drove in the first run on a groundout scoring Walsh. Angels added another run on a first-pitch Brandon Marsh single. Max Stassi followed with a double, Tyler Wade bunted for a single, and Andrew Velazquez drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, adding two more runs and putting the Rangers in a 4-0 hole after four. "We didn't make enough plays," Chris WOodward said after the game. "We have to be better in the inning, we have to make those plays, and Dane did a good job."
Immediately in the fifth, Jared Walsh continued his Rangers' damage with a solo home run, putting Los Angeles up 5-0 on Dane Dunning. The Rangers got a run back in the eighth on a Jonah Heim home run off Syndergaard, keeping Heim's terror against the Angels this season. The Heim home run was the only offense the Rangers could gather against Syndergaard and the Angels bullpen. Texas had two hits in the fifth but couldn't get anything going. Their other hit came in the seventh, but a double play ended that threat quickly. After that, Mitch Garver went deep to cut the Angels lead to 5-2 and a pop in and out dive attempt by Tyler Wade scored Kole Calhoun. "Catching is a hard thing to do in this game and takes a toll on your body," Woodward said about Mitch Garver. "Maybe we're getting the best version of him because he doesn't have to catch or worry about hat from a mental or physical stand point." Like Sunday, the Rangers put pressure in the ninth with the tying run in play, but to no avail.
Dane Dunning's Tuesday was intriguing. His stuff was good, but it was your prototypical good stuff, but not a good result evening. The defense struggled behind Dane despite allowing five earned runs in 6.1 innings (a few could have been designated as unearned), eleven hits, eight strikeouts, and one walk. "I thought Dane did a good job," Woodward said. "Dane kept competing. He executed and pitched well to that point and could have gotten through the [fourth] without any runs." Garrett Richards came out for the first time in eleven days and, on one pitch in the seventh, got Regnifo to hit into a double play, ending a seventh-inning threat. Richards came back out in the eighth inning and allowed a hit. However, he got Tyler Wade to bounce into a double play. Richards racked up two double plays while allowing one baserunner on Tuesday.
